Feeding Friendsy: Rory's Golden Ratios
(Published on 4. November 2026, 00:30 by ThePedallingPianist)
Although Fletcher is a name that holds some meaning in my family, I promise that it was an unintended coincidence that, having given that name to a pancake-eating flamingo that featured in
my contribution to this Feeding Friendsy series that I set in early 2025, that puzzle then didn't get published until a week before I became the father of
twins and also named one of
them Fletcher.
However, once that coincidence had happened, I was horrified of the potential for inferred favouritism, so I immediately got to work setting a puzzle for my other beautiful son, Rory.
ViKingPrime then very generously invited me to sneak that puzzle into this series as a bonus.
The existence of this puzzle should do nothing to undermine what a perfect finale
ViKingPrime and
heliopolix had already set for the series, so please give
Donut Panic a solve and much love. My apologies also to
Marty, whose incredible
introductory puzzle to this series now makes slightly less sense - though is no less stunningly elegant! - and my huge thanks to him for beautifying this puzzle with his aesthetic mastery.
SQUISHDOKU:
The grid is divided into nine 3x3 boxes, which overlap on dashed lines. Place a digit from 1-9 in each cell such that there are no repeats in any rows, columns or boxes.
#FRIENDSHIPGOALS:
Rory the Ravenous Rabbit requires refreshment! Help him hop happily through heaps of herbage, then hit the hay!
HOP 'TIL YOU DROP:
Rory's path from r1c2 to the bed in r1c7 is formed of straight hops in orthogonal directions between two landing cells, with at least one other cell between them. From each landing cell, Rory may (or may not) turn by 90° and begin another hop. Rory's path may cross itself, but only at perpendicular crossings during a hop, i.e. a landing cell may not be visited twice, or coincide with a cell through which another hop passes. There is no specific requirement for Rory necessarily to pass through - or avoid - any of the tasty treats.
RORY'S RATIOS:
Each tasty treat (apples, carrots and strawberries) represents a ratio between the digits either side of it. Two ratios are the same if and only if the tasty treat is the same.
NABNER DOT:
Digits separated by the golden dot are nonconsecutive.
TRIALS AND TRAILS:
In this test of friendship, each hop acts as a Between Line, i.e. each digit on Rory's path between two consecutive landing cells must have a value strictly between the digits in those two landing cells.
Solution code: Digits on the Nabner dot, left to right

A fitting tribute.

The hardest part for me was understanding the rules :) Had to stare at the puzzle for a while to figure out it was possible. From there the digits filled themselves in quite quickly, and the ridiculous route helped with the final digits. Great fun!

Cool addition to the series. I loved it and I'm sure Rory will do so, too!

Wrong sudokupad link - clearly the "new born trenches" have got to me, sorry!

The sudokupad link you gave seems to be the puzzle of the last time.

TPP: Oops! Thanks for pointing this out, it should be fixed now!
