Wow what a great puzzle. Didn’t think I could get through it on my own, but after many many hours over many many evenings I did. What a beautiful finish to a historically brilliant series of puzzles. I can't believe I teared up multiple times putting numbers into a grid, but Rat Run is art, and like all great art it's not only beautiful, but brings the beauty of the world around us into focus. A long solve, but by no means a truly difficult one. The puzzle kept flowing nicely and there was always some deduction to be made without getting stuck for long, making it feel very rewarding despite being a long commitment. Will have to go back and check the earlier ones I've missed as well.

Absolutely stunning. Long - and in the best way. I played for days and could have played this for weeks to come.

This puzzle was never tedious, never unfair. The dynamic fog always just gives you what you need to go on - keeping the decision space tight and focused.

Never thought I'd ever get emotional over a sudoku, but this one is it I guess. Over the years I've gotten so invested in the story and looked forward to every puzzle released and seeing how the story progressed. It's sad to see it end but I am ever so grateful to you Marty for making it and giving us endless hours of joy. Thank you!

What a lovely end to the series, but what a shame it’s over.
This puzzle probably took up nearly 1/3 of the time to solve phase 3 combined (11h, but would have been quicker if I’d realised 2 is a prime number sooner than 9h in), and highlights the issue of Logic-masters only having a max difficulty of 5*, many other 5* puzzles are closer to a 1* than to this one.

Thanks Marty, had lots of fun with all your usual tricks - I cannot imagine how many hours you labored over this amazing final puzzle, much less the series as a whole. ... I will await the sequel wherein Elliot's secrets are revealed. Meanwhile, I travelled back to 2020 and created a much less sophisticated 15x15 grid to fill with pentomino shapes and included some sudoku. puzzle 0003Z9

This has been a phenomenal journey with you and Simon and Finkz and Phinkz. The series itself was very very enjoyable but this grandest finale of all just took everyone’s breath away. I definitely won't be reviving the series - in my eyes it would completely undermine the ending I have worked towards. Took me many, many hours and 2 restarts (one due to an incorrect assumption made very early on, the other from a SudokuPad error which wiped my progress about halfway through!) but I enjoyed every second of it.
Congratulations Marty on a simply incredible series. I’m genuinely a bit emotional that it’s over!

Well, I finally finished after 7 hours 44 minutes. I had several „???“-moments followed by a cooresponding „aha!“. My Brain almost broke around the upper left corner. Very Marty-esk, I should have seen that coming. All in all this was great fun and a worthy ending to my favourite puzzle series ever.

Thank you so much Marty for creating this everlasting masterpiece. I think I will do them all again.

Thank you Marty for a great series. I found the last one was so ridiculously hard that usually I would have given up… but it was the very last Rat Run, so I pushed through. I took a few breaks along the way which led to an aha moment about a primality particular sum of numbers during a sudoku dream.

Ended up finishing in 8 hours according to Sudokupad timer, though a day and half in real life. I don't feel bad about that time at all. This whole journey was wonderful.

Oh wow. That was indeed a Big One. (Perhaps a bit too big for my taste.)
I did get stuck a few times, and even started watching CtC for a hint, but did manage to solve it by myself, eventually, without Simon's help.
What a wonderful end to the story!
Thank you so much for taking us onto this epic adventure, Marty! For me, playing Rat Run was on the same level as watching the entirety of Breaking Bad, if not better.

Dear Marty,

It was Simon that introduced me to LMD, but it was your rat runs that made me stay. I joined here exactly one year ago and rat run 1 was one of the first 10 or so puzzles I tried. One year later, this is now my 400th solve - I dedicate this milestone to you.

What can I say about the puzzle. It took me about 6 hrs to do. I enjoyed every moment of it. I would not have attempted it if it wasn't the rat run finale. Expectations were very high and you delivered. That one way gate was diabolical!

I think that solving this set of 42 puzzles should be on the bucket list of every human being. If there was a Nobel prize for logic puzzles, then you deserve to get one.

I started on my own but figured I would have trouble with the pentomino logic and thus waited for the CtC video, and holy hell given how long it took them I'm not sure I could have even solved it myself.

Wonderful ending to some of my favorite sudokus, now I wonder what's next.

This puzzle has it all, an inspired ruleset, a thematic call-back to the first puzzle, silly interactions between elements and a monstrous demand of deduction by the solver. On top of that, the story telling. 6.5 hours spent in blissful stress and a good time.

This series really went off with a bang! ... wait too soon. RIP Elliot. In all seriousness, thank you Marty for bringing this silly rodent's intellectual journey to us all. I hope I can set like you someday.

What a fantastic finish to an incredible series of puzzles! You've showcased such creativity throughout with all the different variations and twists on the formula which along with the story elements has made following along with each release a real treat. And in this puzzle particularly I loved the sense of adventure and discovery created by the combination of region building, path finding and fog. The way you always create such engaging solve paths filled with deductions that are challenging, interesting and elegant is wonderful, and I love the bits of humour interwoven into the designs.

I feel quite emotional now that I'm at the end, it was an amazing journey with a beautiful conclusion, and I'm going to miss Finkz and looking forward to her puzzles each week. Thank you for all the work you put in to making such a great series! :)

What a beautiful send-off to the series, to Finkz, and to our wonderful narrator. The choice of the 15x15 grid here along with the fog of war was perfect for raising the complexity without it becoming overwhelming, making it feel like a proper finale with momentum behind it. The no-prime sums rule along with just the right amount of traditional clues led to a phenomenal time solving.

Marty,

I only started solving variant sudoku a couple of years ago when I was watching Simon’s solve of one of the Phase 2 Rat Runs (I believe #17: Trapdoors). I got about 5 minutes into the solve before I thought, “Hey this one looks fairly approachable and fun, maybe I’ll give it a go.” After that, I went back and solved all of the previous Rat Runs to get caught up in time before the end of Phase 2. Between Phase 2 and 3, I solved most of your other puzzles because even though there was no Finkz, there was still a whimsy in your puzzles that evoked the same sort of joy and magic that I yearned for, and had come to expect from variant sudoku.

When Phase 3 finally arrived, it delivered on every aspect. It can be hard to wrap up any saga in a satisfying way, but you’ve accomplished that from the perspective of both the story telling and the puzzle solving. I respect when someone knows it’s time for an idea to come to an end rather than milking it to the point of becoming stale. However, I hope that inspiration may strike again some day, and that we may see the return of Rat Run in some way. While these puzzles are unforgettable, I can only hope that with time I have the fortune of forgetting them so that I may solve them once again.

Thank you Marty for bringing me into the wonderful world of variant sudoku! I eagerly await whatever you come up with next!

What a finale! Even given the sheer size of the puzzle, you managed to make deductions quite different from each others (and finding the path in the center bottom part was quite puzzling), instead of heavy repetitive grinding.

The whole series was a year-long stroke of genius. I'll miss it and I won't forget the enjoyment of solving your sublime creations. Thank you Marty.

(and yes, I found out you made so many other puzzles I haven't done yet, I'll sure have a try!)

Marty, thank you so much for this amazing series of puzzles. I still consider myself very much an amateur in the world of Sudoku, but the novelty of these puzzles was enticing enough that I had to give them a try. I've managed to work through all 42 of them, not without plenty of mistakes along the way, and some being solved over the course of days or weeks, but I was always able to eventually find the path of logic to the solution. This final puzzle was an absolute joy, even though I got stuck for hours about 1/3 of the way through because I missed something stupid and obvious :)

Anyway, I just appreciate your setting so much. Your puzzles are challenging, but there's almost always that next big "aha" moment that comes along before I get too discouraged to keep trying.

I've made it a point to solve every new puzzle you post here (not just Rat Run), and I'm slowly working my way through your back catalog as well. Thanks for this amazing gift to the community.

super random question: did you always know this was going to be a pentomino puzzle (or at least not a sudoku)? when i first saw it i was a little surprised, but i'm more than happy with the result

Marty: great question! I alway knew it was going to be a big grid, and so not a sudoku. I thought for a long time that it would be a fillomino, but in the end there was a reason why that wasn't appropriate. But I wanted something with a similar region building vibe, with lots of local interactions between path, regions and digits. Pentominous ended up being the perfect choice

What an amazing puzzle to end the series! I loved the size of it and the long journey it takes you over.

First I want to say to people in doubt, like I was when I was stuck for a good part of the solve, that it's totally doable, there are no errors or mistakes in the rules !

I agree that mentioning in the rules that the grid is 15x15 would be nice (not sure if I used it in my deductions). I also was wandering if the big "dots" at cell intersections were to be considered as walls (in the sense that a region cannot contain a 2x2 with a dot in the middle) which would make sense story wise even though it's not needed for the solve. Like phrasing the rule a bit differently that the pentominos should fill empty space and cannot go through wall features. I don't know...

What an absolutely spectacular ending to such a brilliant series. When the first couple of puzzles dropped ages and ages ago, I thought they were cute little curiosities and that I would eventually get around to them. Now, two years later, I find myself eagerly refreshing the page every (typically) Tuesday evening to get an early jump on the next puzzle.

I worked on this one off and on all day, made a few bad logical leaps from time to time, and ultimately finished in right at four hours, and I genuinely wish I could've milked it for four more. This was an absolute joy to solve from beginning to end, and I cannot wait to forget how I did it so I can run through it all over again.

Thank you, Marty, for the literal days of joy you've given each of us in following our scientist friend, Elliot, Zoe, and—of course—Finkz for these last two years. (And an honorable mention to Phinx as well, along with Finkz's fellow test subjects from the prequel.) I can't wait to see what madness you cook up for us next.

Clarification: Does "Every thick maze wall sits between two separate regions." mean A) "Cells on the opposite side of a walls must be separate regions", or B) "Every wall separates *exactly* two regions.

I think A but wanted to double-check...

Marty: If two orthogonally adjacent cells are separated by a thick maze wall then they are in separate regions.

I wonder if you were partly inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I notice that there are exactly 42 puzzles in the series, and Finkz's brilliance makes me wonder if she's really the experimenter and the 2 scientists were her subjects, like the mice in Douglas Adams's story.

Thoughts before I start solving:

- The maze is beautiful, even just seeing some of it
- Test constraint is almost opposite of that of the first maze "primer" - such style!
- Feeling rather emotional right now, excited for the puzzle, sad that it is almost over, but also quite content that there is going to be a grand finale
- I think you are right Marty in that the story needs a proper ending. It would probably be less satisfying if it went on indefinitely just to fizzle out one day. Endings are bitter, but maybe also sweet? We shall see.

I'll try to take my time with this one, savouring it. I won't have time to watch Simon's solve today anyway, so no pressure to finish in time for that.

I hope that you feel the collective appreciation that we all have for the work you have put into this series over the last two years.
This was truly the perfect way to wrap it up. Not only is the puzzle perfectly challenging and delightfully clever but you also managed to wrap up the story beautifully. You have an uncanny ability to imbue these puzzles with your sense of humor.
What you have done here with this series is without parallel, you have single handedly changed the game. I, for one, am grateful to have been here to see it firsthand. Thanks for everything!

For those intimidated by the 5* estimate, don’t be! It’s certainly BIG and long but it isn’t that hard. And obviously it’s well worth your time.
