EITBON 5: Sundown Syndrome

(Eingestellt am 1. August 2025, 18:59 Uhr von Neokart)

Hi everyone. This is the 5th part of the series inspired by The Carebear's album "Everywhere in the Beginning of Nowhere". I hope you like it.

Rules:

1. S-Cells sudoku: Every row, column and 3x3 box contains the digits 0-9 once each. To enable this, one cell in each row, column and box is a Schrödinger cell (S-Cell): it contains two digits. For the purpose of the other rules, the value of an S-cell is the sum of its two digits.
2. Region Sum Line: The box borders divide each thin blue line into connected segments with the same sum of values.
3. Renban: A pink line (of normal thickness) contains a set of non-repeating consecutive values in any order.
4. Nabner: On a thick yellow line, no two values are consecutive or equal.
5. Cages: Values on a cage cannot repeat.

Recommended to me by skuntsel.

Absolutely lives up to the praise. Highly original, tenacious and challenging, thoroughly delightful to solve.

Thank you for sharing!

My God, I didn't expect this puzzle to be so difficult. It feels like a century has passed since I solved it! But it is indeed an excellent puzzle!

This is an extraordinary puzzle, one of the best puzzles I have ever solved. It has it all: it is hard, but always gives you feed for thought, it is complex, but it opens up its secrets if you think hard enough, it is treacherous, but it will collapse if you pay close attention. The interactions between the two major groups are simply astonishing and on the brink of breaking, but absolutely non-trivial and utterly beautiful, the interplay between the cages and it’s contents, just don’t have proper words to describe how it all combines together, the nabners, which every sane person will expect to disambiguate, play the pivotal roles up until the last digits are placed.

This puzzle is very deep, and it won’t give it away that easily, you will be easily led astray if you think on the surface. It is just flabbergasting how it all resolves. This is truly a one-of-a-kind puzzle, work of a true man of genius. This was a remarkable experience and a stunning adventure. And it is as well aesthetically very pleasing, although a tiny bit overwhelming in an otherwise already hard-to-keep-track-of puzzle.

I was very familiar with all the rulesets, but nonetheless couldn’t avoid all the pitfalls and sometimes took a low hanging fruit that led to a cul-de-sac. Every step, and believe me there are far too many to name a few, feels like a discovery, just a small wiggle and it breaks. And you think to yourself, that it just must work and yet it doesn’t, leaving you clueless where you went wrong or what should be corrected, forcing you to get back to square one and to find another twist (round of applause for not embedding solutions as an easy correctors). Several times until you start to think hard enough and be extremely strict with the logics. Cages did wonders. Renbans and region sun lines did wonders. Nabners did, you guessed it, wonders.

The last thought to share is that at the beginning it felt like a younger sibling of the heliopolix’s classic puzzle (which I admire everyone to solve here https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Raetsel/zeigen.php?id=000HIA), which not only is similar to solution and has similar rules, but as well is aesthetically made in very similar tones. But having solved this puzzle, it by its right deserves its own place in the history of top-notch sudoku puzzles, alongside the classics.

Thank you and take a bow, Neokart!

Neokart: Hi, thanks for the detailed comment. I'm glad you liked my puzzle so much. Many puzzles I've really enjoyed solving have had some kind of trap where, after falling into them, I had to go back and figure out what logic I missed, so I tried to provoke the same thing in this one and somehow reward the thoroughly applied logic. I'll save that Heliopolix's puzzle to solve later, thank you.

Great one. I did get the general idea for break-in quite early but it was really hard to find all dependencies to get it right all the way to the end.
