Take the first cover hard

(Published on 22. March 2021, 09:51 by bigger)

Standard sudoku rules applies. Fill the grid with numbers from 1 to 9 so each digit occurs exactly once in every row, column and 3x3 box.

Digits outside are either behind the first odd digit or the first even digit in that direction.

This puzzle is made by Old Miles from China. If you think my previous puzzle is a fake one star, you are going to have a hard time at this one. With less than 10 people solving Old Miles puzzles, I think I can give you my afterthought on this one, spoiler alert.

Strange thing is, the idea starts at Mark Sweep but ends at glum hippo. Kind of like Dimono's taco, starts at Qodec but ends at peterchayward. This really get me thinking why. I think Dimono accidentally create straight overlapped cages, leading to a lot of identical tricks, which is good, for it shows what it could be. But in my case, things are a little different. There are tricks that sololy belongs to take cover. Later I found an easier explaination is the digit behind parity party. Then I realised parity party is the sum before the first odd or even digit, first odd or even digit included. This actually solved one of my biggest problem with the parity party series-why it can be just suggesting the first digit while all other two digit clues have odd and even. It makes us think it's a complicated rule but it' sactually a simple one. If the parity party rule is simplier, Old Miles and I could think of this idea much earlier. Thank goodness I solve some parity party before.
