Self-determination

(Eingestellt am 5. September 2022, 15:46 Uhr von stephane.bura)

Place the digits 1 to 8 in each row and each column.

Each horizontal and contiguous pair of cells that is fully comprised in the first 7 columns forms the coordinates of a digit in the grid:

  • The leftmost member of the pair is its row.
  • The rightmost member of the pair is its column.
  • Its value is the row in which the pair is.

For instance, if R4C1 contains 7 and R4C2 contains 5 then R7C5 contains 4.

Enjoy!

Bonus puzzle: you can apply the same logic with a 9x9 grid using pairs in the first 8 columns and with a 1 in R9C5.

@Andrewsarchus Perseverance :)
I toyed with self-reference in other puzzles (0003EC, 0003EM, 0008NI, 0009TY) and wanted to find a ruleset and a grid that pushed this idea as far as I could push it. This was a happy discovery.

Very cool philosophy of regionless sudoku.
(I think it's easier than it seems at first glance, definitely worth trying, and the absence of regions makes cheating impossible)

That was a mind bender! I figured I'd give it a few minutes of thought before watching the CTC showcase and I'm glad I did. Very proud of that solve. Beautiful idea!

@zeneszerzo and @KNT Thanks!
I'm beaming :)

wow! I've been aware of this puzzle and have avoided it out of fear since it was published, but (maybe embarrassingly?) the CTC feature gave me the push to try this. One of the most awesome eureka moments ever and a smooth clean up after the a-ha. magnifique

I can't say this looked like my cup of tea originally, but then I read the comments below and thought I'd give it a go.. And goodness I'm glad I did! Rarely do I get such an a-ha moment solving puzzles (they are always my fave moments too!), but when the penny dropped, it was just splendid. Thank you so much :)

Wow! Great puzzle! This is like the boss of numbered rooms. How do you even come up with such an idea. Glad to have you back creating puzzles. :)

Note: There is a narrow logical path.
The break-in requires you to thoroughly understand the consequences of the ruleset.

So you might set the label "Latin Square" instead.

Okay, I added the tag so we're both right ;)

@CHalb Well, it is a Sudoku without regions.
Bookmark it ;)

Wow, this looks fascinating! Please remove the Sudoku tag, so I might find it again not just by chance ;-) .
