Dotted Islands

(Published on 29. August 2026, 06:50 by Belamis)

Sudoku: Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Islands: Shade some cells such that all shaded cells form a single orthogonally connected region called the ocean, and all unshaded cells form islands. No 2x2 area may consist entirely of ocean cells. Different islands may touch diagonally, but not orthogonally.

A coconut connects an ocean cell with an island cell. The connected island must have a size equal to the digit in the coconut. In addition, the island must contain no digits larger than the connected coconut.

The island cell connected by a coconut must be a maximum or minimum digit in that island. Islands MAY contain repeated digits, and this can include the maximum or minimum digit.

Thermo: Digits along a thermometer increase from bulb to tip.

On the top half of 3 stars for me. Pleasant solve, but the max/min rule related to coconut land was a bit ankward to use

Seems there are multiple solutions for coconut 6? I randomly tried one of them and got the solution code correct.
-------------------------------------------------
It's hard to trouble shoot without more info. If you try the other way(s) I think you will find that coconut 6 (or 7, or even the 4) will end up not being a maximum or minimum digit on their respective islands.

I was doing well for about an hour and then discovered it was broken. Ah, well, perhaps another time - I was having fun.

Beautiful challenging puzzle! I got really scared at the end after reaching a deadly pattern, forgetting about the min/max digit on the coconut :) 4* for me.
