Each cage indexes a different cell.

I remembered watching Simon solve "Coordinate Arrows" by Piatato which featured similar logic (using arrows instead of cages), so I found it quite easy. Very enjoyable nonetheless!

Hmm, I remember having solved some similar indexing puzzles here where instead of cages there were arrows ( the shaft indexed row and the tip the column, being the sum of shaft and row the number that had to be placed). I suppose knowing the logic helped me a lot. 2.5 stars for me

Out oft curiosity: This puzzle seems to be inspired by "Signposts" Form NotVeryNeat, right?

ND: It is funny that you say that, because I solved it last week (when it was featured on Artisanal Sudoku), but I had set this puzzle last month or so.
But the logic is really similar indeed.
Also, like amirs pointed out, this is not really a novel idea (from NotVeryNeat or me), look at the puzzle Coordinate Arrows from Piatato featured 3 years ago on CtC. This is probably what inspired me at first.

For the first 10 minutes I've been convinced that this couldn't solve. But once you get a grip of the beautiful logic it just flows. Fantastic ruleset and setting, thanks a lot for sharing!
