In ancient Crete, King Minos broke his oath to Poseidon, who cursed his wife Pasiphaë to bear a bull-headed monster—Minotaur. To hide this shame, the master craftsman Daedalus built A Massive Labyrinth (this 9×9 Sudoku, where each row, column, and box contains the digits 1-9 exactly once) to imprison the abomination. Minos also forced the defeated Athens to send a tribute of seven youths and maidens every nine years as fodder for the Minotaur.

Hearing of this, the hero Theseus vowed to slay the monster. Upon arriving in Crete as a tribute, he won the heart of Princess Ariadne, who sought help from Daedalus and received a ball of thread. Theseus tied one end of Ariadne's Thread (a 3-Modular Line, where any three consecutive digits have distinct remainders modulo 3) at the entrance, and holding the other end, he navigated the labyrinth, avoiding traps and following the Only Correct Path (moving only orthogonally) to the center, where he vanquished the Minotaur. He then followed the thread back out, leading Ariadne and the other youths to freedom.

When King Minos learned of this, he was furious. He imprisoned Daedalus and his son Icarus atop the High Tower within the labyrinth (located at R4C2; the digit here is greater than its orthogonal neighbors). Determined to escape, they fashioned wings from beeswax and seagull feathers. To reach Athens, they flew Towards the Northeast (digits strictly increasing from the High Tower along the diagonal path towards the top-right) and finally regained their freedom.
