The Mystery Of The Three Chameleons
(Eingestellt am 26. Juni 2026, 22:17 Uhr von The Pi Guy)
Debut puzzle, inspired by Marty Sears’ 12 by 12 sudoku ‘Gross Misconduct’. The puzzle was released on the Cracking The Cryptic Discord server in November 2025 and featured on Cracking The Cryptic (by Mark) on the 15th of March 2026. The image above is of the original puzzle, while the design has since been adjusted slightly to be more colour-blind friendly.
Puzzle rules
Normal sudoku rules apply (put each of the digits 1-9 into every row, column and 3 by 3 box).
Every digit has a value equal to itself (e.g. 1 has a value of 1), except for the digits 7, 8 and 9 (the chameleons), which have a value equal to their row (for 7), column (for 8) or box (for 9) i.e. the 7 in row 1, the 8 in column 1 and the 9 in box 1, all have a value of 1, etc.
There are four clue types:
Arrows - The values on an arrow must add to the value in the attached circle (e.g. the arrow in column 1 could contain 1 and 2, with 7 in the circle).
Black dots - One value must be double the other (e.g. the digits on the black dot in column 3 could be 6 and 8).
German whispers lines - Every neighbouring pair of cells along a green (normal) line must contain values that are at least 5 apart (e.g. the German whispers line in column 6 could have a 3 above a 9).
Renban lines - The values on a purple (hollow) line must be a consecutive sequence (e.g. 1,2,3) in some order, with no repeats (e.g. the renban in box 2 could be 7,3,2, reading downwards).
Not all possible clues are given.
[Additional help: Rows increase downwards, columns increase left to right and boxes increase left to right, top to bottom i.e. Top - Boxes 1-3, Middle - Boxes 4-6, Bottom - Boxes 7-9. Use colours (e.g. yellow for row, orange for column, blue for box) or letters (e.g. R/C/B or A/C/B in the corners of cells) to keep track of the chameleons.]
Lösungscode: Column 8

Very nice! After the rules were properly understood and the initial confusion was gone, it became a smooth solve and that was because of careful setting, congratulations on your first puzzle! Thanks
(Reply from The Pi Guy) That’s very kind of you to say, thank you. :)

What a lovely comment. :) You may not be surprised to know that the humour was intended (the puzzle was inspired by Marty Sears after all). ;)

Very nice puzzle! I’ve never seen this modifier before and it was really fun to parse out! Some of these combos that showed up felt almost humorous. Thank you for this treat :)
