Ranked Japanese Sum Cages

(Published on 22. June 2026, 08:41 by Justalilguy)

Play online in Sudokupad.

Rules

  • Japanese Sums: Shade some cells in the grid. Fill the unshaded cells with digits from 1-9 such that there are no repeats in any row or column. A Clue outside shows the sum of the digits in a single group of unshaded cells in that row/column. These groups of unshaded cells appear in the order of the clues shown, with at least one shaded cell separating any two groups.

  • Only the outlined cells outside the grid contain a Japanese Sums clue, and an outlined cell always contains a non-zero clue. All such cells are given. A ? can be any digit from 0-9. A leading ? cannot be 0.

  • Ranked Cages: Numbers cannot repeat in a cage and no two cage sums are the same. Cage sums are ranked from 1 to 28 with 1 being the lowest cage sum and 28 being the highest. A shaded cell contributes zero to a cage sum.

  • An inequality sign points to the lower of the two numbers it connects.

Incredible puzzle! There are many tiny and hard to find deductions required. I thought I broke it in the end when in fact I didn't because of a rule I forgot. Thanks!

solving once already is hard enough. Beautiful construction, just got stuck for a while in the final deductions. Loved the logic around the 28 sum. Thanks
