A Longer Snake in the Grass

(Published on 18. June 2026, 10:53 by marty_sears)

Ever since making Snake in the Grass I've been wanting to make a 9x9 version. Here it is!

    Rules:

    Normal sudoku rules apply.

SNAKE: Draw a snake, one cell wide, that starts and ends at two neighbouring cells within the same 3x3 box. The snake only moves orthogonally, and visits every cell in the grid apart from the large grey rock in the central cell. The snake may not enter any cell more than once.

INSECTS: The snake must eat every insect, and these divide the snake into segments. Adjacent segments along the snake have consecutive totals. No two segments have the same total.

GREY PEBBLES: The snake must not pass directly through any grey pebbles. Digits joined by a grey pebble are either consecutive, or have a 1:2 ratio (or both.)

EGGS: One of the four digits surrounding an egg indicates the number of spots on that egg.

Solution code: Row 9 from left to right

Magnificent puzzle! At an early stage, the puzzle seemed broken and I couldn‘t find my mistake until I realized that grey pebbles are not black dots. Thanks, Marty.

After all those rat puzzles it was easy and fun!

Fun to solve, and hard, with a bit of extra excitement not knowing which end of the snake is the one that bites.

Loved it. Difficult but you could always deduce some bits and pieces here and there till in untangled

Snake run 2 - a fitting encore to the rat runs! The first digit is a bit challenging especially if you haven't done the first snake run. The second digit is 5* hard and one cannot progress without making this deduction. Rated this 5* for difficulty. Thanks!

Wow this puzzle had me snakebitten! I struggled for a long time to get any paths started or to narrow down where the start/end should be. I hope there is a video solve, maybe I can learn some new tricks.

Once I was able to place some segments, I reached a point where everything became much smoother. It's a very nice puzzle, just very challenging for me

Cool puzzle! I was stuck for literally hours until I realized the rules say:

"the snake starts and ends at two neighbouring cells **within the same 3x3 box**"

Without that additional rule, the puzzle is impossible (for me). Might even be worth bolding it.

That was fun, but a LOT harder than the original!
(I re-did the original as a reminder. At the time I gave it two starts for difficulty; I must be getting dumber, since I considered it 3 stars today. :-) )

Doing the math and locating the first digit was fairly easy, but then … As usual I enjoyed my stumbling along the solution path. Thank you very much for creating and sharing another beautiful puzzle.

Super fun! I used a calculator to find the sequence of segment sums))
