I didn't use the ring, I really loved the coloring and that's how I broke in.

Yes, each of my puzzles so far have been a play on Phistomefel's Ring. You should find a Cracking the Cryptic explanation if you search. I see you solved my second. The first is the most straightforward use of the Ring Theorem: you may want to start there first and see how it applies.

Curious about difficulty. Intended 3*, but lowered as I saw jalebc get there in 7 min.
