Sudokuvania 2: Lineage of Logic by Skeptical Mario
Ever since he disappeared in a Sudoku attack, you have had questions about your father's fate. Now that the mythical castle Sudokuvania has reappeared, you know the answers must lie somewhere within.
This is, obviously, a sequel to Sudokuvania: Digits of Despair. Even before publishing that puzzle, I knew I wanted to make another giant sudoku puzzle that played like a Metroidvania; I think I'd be happy just making these things until I keel over. But one thing at a time. This is the second game in the Sudokuvania series: Lineage of Logic.
Sudokuvania 2 continues to bridge the gap between video games and pencil puzzles. As in the previous game, by clearing the dynamic fog, you will reveal the rules that apply to each grid of the intricately connected puzzle. Some rules are portrayed as quests, and some as inventory items, but most will be familiar to those experienced in variant sudoku.
Notably, I tried to implement variable difficulty in the form of optional clues. In addition to the difficult boss puzzles, optional enemy puzzles can be played to learn a digit and bypass difficult logic. In addition, one ending to the puzzle's quests can be reached without completing most of the grids. Play however you like!
Warning: SudokuPad is not optimized for very large puzzles. Make sure the setting "Experimental > Test Large Puzzle UI" is ON (the bottommost setting option in the menu). Zooming and panning is not supported for mobile devices and may not work properly in all browsers.
To zoom, use the mouse scroll wheel or, on a Mac, two fingers on the touchpad. To drag, hold down the right mouse button.
Rules
Complete the Quests by filling cells in each grid according to its rules. Completely filling all grids is NOT required to reach an ending of the story.
Sudoku - Unless overridden by an uncovered rule, you may assume that each grid follows normal sudoku rules: Place digits from 1-n into each grid, where n is the grid's square size, without repeating in a row, column, or box.
Dynamic Fog - Entering a correct digit into a cell will clear the fog from that cell and perhaps others.
Dynamic Rules - Additional rules will be displayed in this panel when certain cells are selected. Abridged rules are also displayed on the map itself. These rules are only valid if the selected cell is NOT covered by fog.
Play the puzzle on Sudokupad (desktop only)
For common questions and other help, please visit the Sudokuvania website. I welcome all comments and feedback, and any questions asked here will be copied to that page.
Update: v1.0.2
The last update unfortunately broke a puzzle worse than before, so this fixes that and adds a few more points for clarity.
Update: v1.0.1
I've created a new version with minor updates. v1.0.1 uses the same id hash as v1.0 so you can continue where you left off. It has updated rules text for several grids and clue types, especially the Observatory which I know has been confusing. Full patch notes are available on the website.
I hope you enjoy the puzzle! :-)
Immense gratitude to sirxemic and Sven Neumann for creating the tools that made it possible for me to set this puzzle; special thanks to cirne for their json post-processing script which enabled the dynamically-updating rules; and everyone who tested and gave feedback during the months of development.

I was surprised to see that I was solve number 851 in 51 days on sudokupad. I didn't realize this metroidvania style of sudoku was so popular! Or that variant suduko puzzlers were so dedicated!
Many thanks SkepticalMario for sharing this puzzle. It is an absolute beast. I can only imagine how long it must have taken to design and test this puzzle to such a high quality. Hats off and looking forward to the next one (if there is one!)
To anyone attempting this puzzle, it takes a very very very very long time to get to the the LMD solution code. 30+ hours is a safe bet - and I skipped all the optional bosses. Also, every step is logical. You do not need to guess. You might be confused and take a while to figure things out, but the rules as explained within the puzzle are sufficient to get to the end. It is a different matter altogether that some open ended cells might take absolutely forever to resolve. And therein lies my only complaint - perhaps this puzzle has too many open ended branches that take forever to resolve. You will often find yourself scratching your head, panning helplessly, getting frustrated, and having a total wtf feeling. The latter is especially true towards the end as fatigue kicks in... Just keep making progress wherever you can. Some parts are also a bit grindy and require Goodliffing to get through. Finally, do not skip the prologue!
Some other comments also note that there is one cell in the end that remains foggy. I assume that is a bug, as I got to the LMD answer and so presumably have solved everything.

Hello! In the latest update the box lines in the Entryway have changed from 3x2 to 2x2. I don't believe that was intentional so wanted to alert you if you didn't already know!

Hi SkepticalMario!
I've been working on a small web project temporarily called Metrosudokuvania, built mostly through vibe coding. The idea is to make large exploration-style Sudoku puzzles a bit easier to play in a dedicated web interface, with quite a few optimizations specifically for very large puzzles and maps.
At the moment, I've only implemented Sudokuvania: Digits of Despair, and I've also made a full Chinese localization for it. I designed the localization system so that, if other enthusiasts ever want to translate these puzzles into other languages, adding further localizations should be relatively straightforward.
You can try the current version here:
https://skaldlab.studio/Metrosudokuvania/
I'd like to ask whether you'd be okay with me including your puzzles in this project, with clear credit and links back to the original puzzle pages.
For now this is mainly about Sudokuvania: Digits of Despair, but in the future I'd also love to add the Sudokoid series in the same format.
Thanks!
— Skald

Are you meant to assume that the balcony doesn't have a condition, like "hot" for the kitchen, when drawing the "Draw your conclusion" line?

My partner and I are currently working our way through it and we are loving it!
We are currently at the event that triggers after finishing the Split Pea line. Without spoiling anything: Should we try to solve Rowsville to discover the start digit of the new quest line, or can we fill it in because we technically already know it?
EDIT: On more question. It is initially unclear if the bonus level with the ice cream is the source of the ice cream recipe or needs it to be discovered elsewhere first. It would be nice if there could be hint on that given by a villager.

I have beaten the boss in Grid 15, but nothing happened when I entered the digit. I looked up a video and the boss is supposed to reveal a bunch of ! cells which did not happen for me. I'm on 1.0.2 and the video was from 1.0.1.
Update: apparently you also need to finish the split pea line to unlock that stuff.
Also the rule in that grid is very unclear. Can we assume that the batteries are the same digits as in the dungeon? It also refers to the line in box 5, however a later statement seemed like it was about a different line which was extremely confusing. This stuff should really be stated explicitly.

I believe the Boss in Grid 06 is optional. At least, I filled in the square before attempting the boss. It's possible I made a lucky mistake.

The descriptions for enemy cells say they are optional and for practice. However, once you solve it, there is a digit given to place in the main puzzle. You might want to re-word the description so players know there IS a benefit to solving them.

To get to the balcony, unless I'm wrong, the only way to place the 2 is to assume the questline starts in the balcony. It is not clear that it starts in the balcony, just that you must complete some task in the balcony to unlock the questline fully. If it is the only way to figure out where the 2 goes, I suggest making it more clear that the quest line physically starts in the balcony.

WARNING: Do not play the Observatory Boss from v1.0.1.
It has come to my attention that I copied the wrong hash when creating it. Taking any action in this puzzle (short ID zs7fha4s95) will overwrite your progress in the main Sudokuvania 2 map.
I'm genuinely sorry to anyone affected by this error.

The difficulty of the Sudoku section this time is much lower than the previous one.
'Stalking the Freezer' is the only one that makes me feel like the difficulty can keep up with previous bosses
Regarding the parts beyond Sudoku, the difficulty remains the same as before, especially in the later stages.
Speaking of which, I recall that during this period, someone created fan works, and I don't remember the difficulty of those being particularly high. However, I think this is normal. After all, with so many bosses, each representing an independent Sudoku puzzle, it's impossible for the difficulty of every boss to match that of the previous one.
The above is the true feeling of one of the problem solvers.

is the shop supposed to stay hidden even after you unlock its door, because i can't see any of the wares even though i reached it and im unsure if its intended since im having a hard time finding the next step after finishing that questline
edit:nevermind it took me 3 days to notice that i missed some interaction between 2 particular grids

Regarding the rules of BOSS "A Night's Tale", they are not very user-friendly for problem solvers from non-English-speaking countries.
Suggested addition: The positions of the stars are solely for aesthetic purposes.
And: the galaxy is 180°-rotationally symmetric about itself, not about R5C5.
Regarding the rules of the blink bracelet, if anyone doesn't understand at once, it means that among the four directions (up, down, left, and right), the indicated direction is the closest N.
---
Mario: Both of these have been addressed in v1.0.1, thank you for informing me!
am 27. Juli 2026, 16:56 Uhr von kid
In the boss "A Night's Tale", the 9's galaxy is seems not center-symmetry; and in the boss "Through the Ringer", the rule of Graplling Hook should be corrected as "N is the value of the tip's cell"
---
Mario: Both of these have been addressed in v1.0.1, thank you for pointing them out!

I have already played the first Sudokuvania before. There is no doubt that both puzzles are carefully designed and full of amazing details, which always force me to think a lot and finaly reach the answer. It's such a nice experience to fill in the cells with the digits.I can't find words to adequately describe the feelings when I go through the last few areas, maybe it's the power of logic.

I'm not a regular sudoku player, but I did get to the end of the first Sudokuvania and have been looking forward to this one for a while!
For what it's worth, I found the description for the 'hot' area slightly confusing in its brevity. I'd not encountered this variant before and needed to do a fair amount of googling to understand both what the variant is usually called and then what the implications of the rule were.

Answer: Every cell the quest lines enter is in a grid where digits must be entered.
am 24. Juli 2026, 17:21 Uhr von CitrusGremlin
Quick question: Quest lines can't exit the grid, but can they cut corners? I'm trying to determine in Grid 02 if the quest line could move from r9c8 directly SE into the next grid cutting the solid black corner or if it's forced to go into either r9c9 or r8c9.
am 24. Juli 2026, 17:02 Uhr von aturtledoesbite
Hello! I have a question.
Quest lines are stated to remain within the bounds of the grids; does this allow for them to cut a corner? e.g., going from cell A diagonally down and right to cell B, where the cell below cell A (and to the left of cell B) is outside the grids?
