Thermarrows [YYJ Pack]

(Published on 30. May 2026, 01:00 by yttrio)

This was originally created for the Yin Yang Journey puzzle pack. Links to previous puzzles in the pack are below:
Go Yin Yang
Through the Caverns
Sandwich Break
Staircase Serpent
Roman Negativity
Into Chaos
At Odds with Where to Go
Twin Yang
Balanced Whispers

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Yin Yang: Shade some cells such that all shaded cells are orthogonally connected, all unshaded cells are orthogonally connected, and no 2x2 area is fully shaded or fully unshaded.

Circled cells may be either shaded or unshaded, and each line (outside of the circled cell) must contain at least one shaded cell and at least one unshaded cell.

Circled cells combined with shaded cells along the attached line act as a valid thermometer clue with the circle as the bulb: digits must strictly increase along the line from the bulb to the tip. Any unshaded cells (other than potentially the circle) are ignored for the purposes of the thermometer.

Circled cells combined with unshaded cells along the attached line act as a valid arrow clue with the circle as the bulb: all unshaded digits along the line must sum to the digit in the circle. Any shaded cells (other than potentially the circle) are ignored for the purposes of the arrow.

6x6 Example:

The image below shows a sample 6x6 puzzle and solution with the same rule set.
Note: For 6x6 Sudoku, adjacent digits on a German Whispers line must have a difference of at least 3 (instead of the usual 5)
Play the example in SudokuPad.

Solution code: Digits in shaded cells in row 6 (left to right) followed by digits in shaded cells in column 6 (top to bottom)

Wow, moving from the 6x6 to 9x9 was a really big jump in difficulty. Got stuck at the start for a good while, but once I finally found my break-in, it was pretty satisfying. I'd been looking at the wrong arrow to figure out where to start.

Very cool puzzle. Thank you!
Maybe I was lucky and found the crucial deductions quite fast, so it felt more like 3*.
