I typed the given digits into Open Sudoku and did the solve there instead.

It was only after solving the puzzle I noticed the publication date.

Here's some irony for you. I entered this puzzle into a SudokuPad empty grid for easier solving. But midway through my solve I made a typo and removed "1" as a candidate from a cell instead of "4". Then I had to painstakingly retrace my steps to find my mistake (the kind of mistake that's not possible on paper, lol)

very hard to read my notes. I know that was the intention. Not my cup of tea but still a fun thing to see once. Took me an hour not counting the breaks for my eyes.

Nice! Fortunately, there's an old app on my phone which can generate almost all the kinds of grid puzzles to solve. Including sudokus (newspaper-like only though, not LMD-). It's less convenient than Sudokupad, but it allows to enter code for initial grid and checks whether solution is valid.
So, here's the funny part: I solved it on my commute home and never used a paper! Thanks!

I tried printing the puzzle, but then couldn‘t see what I‘d written by pen… what a waste of ink ;-). Thanks for sharing.
