Parity Party

(Published yesterday, 16:46 by Chilly)

This is a chaos construction rule-set I've been looking at recently. I'm not sure if it's been done before (most things usually have!) but I haven't seen it. I plan to make a small pack of puzzles using it, but here's one to kick things off. I expect it's around 4*, but we'll see what people think.

The Rules:

  • Normal irregular Sudoku rules apply.
  • Chaos construction: regions are to be determined, and must consist of a set of nine orthogonally connected cells, containing the digits 1-9 exactly once each.
  • Dead ends: a cell containing a blue square is a dead end - a dead end in a region is a cell that is attached orthogonally to only one other cell in its region.
  • Open ends: a cell containing an orange circle is an open end - an open end in a region is a cell that is attached orthogonally to more than two other cells in its region.
  • Digits in a cell with an orange shape must be odd, and digits in a cell with a blue shape must be even.
  • A digit in a cell with a small green circle counts the number of digits having the same parity (odd, even) as itself in the surrounding 3x3 area, including itself.

Solution code: All digits and borders in row 5. Where there is a border separating two digits insert a '-' (not including grid edges). For example, if the digits were 123456789, and there were two borders in total, one between 3 and 4 and another between 7 and 8, then the code would be 123-4567-89.

Breakin was brutal but once the regions start building it was really fun.
