Crate Cave

(Published on 16. January 2026, 19:29 by KNT)

Shade some cells such that all unshaded cells are orthogonally connected, and all orthogonally connected groups of shaded cells touch the edge of the grid. Clued cells cannot be shaded.

Additionally, crates may be placed in some unclued, unshaded cells such that no crate shares an edge with either a shaded cell or another crate. Crates block connectivity of unshaded cells.

A clued cell has one of two meanings:

1) The total count of unshaded cells seen in all four directions, including itself, where shaded cells, crates, and the edge of the grid obstruct vision.

2) The total number of crates in the same row or column as the clue cell. No two orthogonally adjacent clues may both be of this type.

An 8x8 example is provided:

Just fantastic, as good as it gets! Didn’t believe until the very end that this has a solution at all given the tiny bit of information. Ridiculously clever, very innovative and too infatuating. Take a bow, KNT!

This is an attempt to create a Cave version of Halligen, loosely based off this old ruleset: https://mellowmelon.wordpress.com/corral/crate-corral/

This individual puzzle aside, I think this is a fun idea, and I would welcome more puzzles of this kind by other authors.
