The start of each line is the caged cell at one of its ends. The crossword answer is written on the line using each letter's rank in the alphabet, where A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc. For letters whose rank has two digits, the ones digit follows the tens digit on the line.

Example: the letters of the word "Fun" have ranks 6, 21, and 14, so the word "Fun" would appear on a line as 6 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 4.
