What a wonderful idea to create puzzle for your family Christmas celebration.
I tend to overthink whenever I plan a family activity, so I thought you may be interested in hearing my experience before the actual competition:
If everyone in your family is used to using a phone or tablet, I'd probably recommend using the software instead of pen and paper.
I have a bit more experience with variant sudoku than your family (only 1 and 2 stars, though), and I tried solving the puzzle with all checkers turned off to kind of simulate having a printed version. I did this after having solved the puzzle with conflict and solution check on. I found it so much more difficult without the reassurance of the solution checker, and it took me twice as long, even though I already solved the same puzzle once before.
If you do provide a printed version, maybe you could also print a red and pink line and write "odd/even" and "consecutive, but in any order" next to them, just to help your family remember. I know I struggled to understand renban lines the first times I encountered them, so your family might also appreciate actual examples of valid pink lines, such as "1-2-3-4", "2-1-4-3".
Merry Christmas to you and your family. I'm sure they'll enjoy the competition and appreciate you creating a puzzle for the occasion.

A nice solve that took me 5 min. My family is not so keen to puzzling, so I don't think me making them solve this for a prize would end with me giving one away lol, but I really do enjoy this puzzle!

That was nice and simple but then I'm familiar with variants. Would you be sharing a printed version on the day or sending out the link?
---Since my family is unfamiliar with the software, I am planning to print both versions on a single sheet of paper (front and back) along with the rules and handing everyone a copy. We will solve the warm-up together than flip them over at the same time. I suppose learning the software first by doing the warm-up that way would be an option too but I think I will save the software for after.
