Web Design

Here's a puzzle I started making over 2 years ago, and has been on my 'to finish' list ever since.

Normal sudoku rules apply.

WEB:
• Help Cecil the Spider to build a web using silky threads.
• A single silky thread must start at a white spot and connect to another white spot that is either one or two cells away in a straight line (horizontally, vertically or diagonally.) Any further and the thread will break!
• Two silky threads may not cross each other.
• The digit on a white spot indicates how many silky threads attach to it.
• The two white spots connected by a silky thread may not contain the same digit.

INSECTS:
• If a black insect sits between two digits, one is double the other.
• If a stripy green insect sits between two digits, they have a difference of at least 5.
• If a spotty red insect sits between two digits, one is odd and the other is even.

CECIL:
• The digit being thought about by Cecil the Spider indicates how many of the afore-mentioned insects have been caught on silky threads.

Lösungscode: Column 9 reading downwards

Nice puzzle, however I think the rules should be clarified: a web can NOT go through a white dot. I spent quite a while avoiding making connections because I wasn't sure of this until I just decided to assume it and the puzzle solved. The rule right now is a bit ambiguous.

Definitely one of my favorite Marty Sears puzzles, since I was able to solve it

One of the most entertaining and adorable puzzles I've seen in a while! The balance between numerical reasoning and spatial reasoning was perfect for me.

So easy to make mistakes in this wonderfully delightful puzzle. But it is so smooth and not very hard either. Great fun! Thanks Marty, again, and again, and again…

You just deliver every time. Lets me realize I dont see that well anymore: a bit small for smartphone solvers. The silk did not help hehe. Amazing setting Marty.

Absolutely brilliant. I loved the interaction between Cecil's thought and the other clues.

Gorgeous!
I don't know how you come up with such creative new puzzles every time that makes us think differently every time. Thank you so much for sharing all of those!

To answer Felis_Timon, they do not go through white spots, no

Quick question for clarification: Can a silky thread go through white spots? Like, can there be a connection between r5c5 and r7c7 or does the spot at r6c6 prevent that? And if it can exist, could r5c5 connect to both r6c6 and r7c7 or would that count as crossing?

Marty: In this scenario, the thread would be two separate threads both connecting to the spot in r6c6

Beautiful.

I honestly don't know how you keep coming up with these novel rulesets that are so intuitive to internalise and so satisfying to work through. Even when they're challenging (although this one wasn't too bad), they never feel like an effort. It almost seems unfair that we get them for free.

Probably Cecil won’t be proud of this spoky design, but it works. Thank you very much for creating and sharing another lovely puzzle-constraint and beautiful puzzle-art.
