Sudoku Variants Series (452) - Sum Skyscrapers

(Published on 28. November 2025, 06:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a unique Sudoku variant every week.
I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Coming very soon: Easy Peasy Sudoku Advent Calendar
Starting on Monday December 1, I will publish an easy sudoku variant every day as part of a sudoku advent calendar. I have chosen 24 variants from SVS that turned out to be too difficult and made an easier version of this type. There will be solving hints with each variant, so there is a lot to learn, beside the fun of solving.
The next SVS will be published on December 26.

Sum Skyscrapers
Apply classic sudoku rules.
Each digit represents a skyscraper of the corresponding height. Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of the visible buildings from that direction, where higher buildings block the view of lower buildings.

Solve online in Sudokupad or in Penpa+.

I found the beginning quite simple, but what choice should I make next? I created a spreadsheet full of possible additions, but a simple solution remained elusive. From that spreadsheet, I made one choice and filled in an entire column. From there, after a few tries, I managed to solve the puzzle.
Thanks for this challenging puzzle.

This one is not an easy one, not two stars at all !

The current rating is indeed 3 stars, close to 4. I thought the tricks included were quite obvious, but obviously players think otherwise. This type might be a good candidate for next years Adventcalendar? :)

Thank you very much for creating and sharing another beautiful SVS-puzzle, which was a bit trickier than expected. (But I’m not familiar with this constraint…)

Skyscraper sums introduce a new math element to standard skyscrapers. I enjoyed even if it was a bit mind bending.
