Calm Construction

(Published on 16. November 2025, 11:42 by oskode)

I've had the idea of adding a Chaos Construction ruleset on top of normal Sudoku regions for about a year, so actually setting that puzzle has been long overdue.

Although very different puzzles, I have to shout out the Destruction-series by NXTMaster, which must have served as an unconscious inspiration. Anyway, here's my puzzle. Enjoy!

Rules:

  • Sudoku: Fill all rows, columns and marked 3x3 boxes with the digits 1-9 without any repeats.
  • Chaos Construction: Divide the grid into 9 additional regions of 9 orthogonally connected cells. Each extra region contain the digits 1-9 without repeats.
  • Circles: A digit in a circle indicates how many cells (including itself) overlap between its 3x3 box and its additional region.

Ratings and comments are very much appreciated. Thank you for playing!

Solution code: The digits in row 7 from left to right, with a "-" between digits in different Chaos Construction regions

I tricked myself at the beginning. The digits in the circles in the destruction series tell you how many cells are seen by a kings move from that cell. Took me a while to catch that the circles here are not the same and need to be in different regions and tell the whole amount, not just adjacent.

Solved this with my partner and it still took us almost two hours. Really elegant rule set that leads to some complex logic. Excellent puzzle!

Wonderful construction. I made a logical error that bit me in the butt toward the end of the solve. Serves me right for rushing, haha
