Back in the '80s, at UC San Diego, there was a research lab called the Center for Music Experiment (CME). It was housed in the building that had been the bowling alley when the campus was originally a military base. A lot of the technology and techniques we now take for granted in making music on the computer were developed there. Grad students were creating some of the first digital recording, sequencing, and algorithmic composition software, and you couldn't hardly walk into the place without running into a Pulitzer Prize winning composer working on his next piece.
