Up to Nosferatu (with ChinStrap)

(Published on 31. October 2025, 10:00 by sujoyku)

ChinStrap and I have teamed up to bring you some scary Nosferatu action. The Nosferatu cells bite adjacent Prey cells and absorb all their value, and each digit appears once in a Nosferatu and a Prey cell. To complete the double modifier madness, some Up to N-clues spook around the grid. The difficulty is hard to estimate, but we think it should be around high 3 or low 4 stars. Many thanks to gdc for testing! We wish you Happy Halloween and joyful solving!

Rules:

Sudoku
- Each row, column, and 2x4 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 8 once each.

Nosferatu and Prey
- Place one Nosferatu and one Prey cell in each row, column, and 2x4 region such that each Nosferatu cell is orthogonally adjacent to exactly one Prey cell.
- Both Nosferatu and Prey cells have to form a complete set of the digits 1 to 8, i.e. no two Nosferatu cells may contain identical digits and the same holds true for the Prey cells.
- The value of a cell that is not Nosferatu or Prey is its digit. The value of a Nosferatu cell is the sum of its digit and the digit in the adjacent Prey cell. The value of a Prey cell is 0.

Up to N-sums
- A clue outside the Row or Column N indicates the sum of all values up to the first cell seen from the clue that contains the value N. (The value N itself is not included in the sum.)

Thank you sujoyku, what an awesome puzzle! I found each step of the break in to present a consistent challenge, yet the logic flowed delightfully and I never wasted any thinking. I often dislike the flow of 8x8s, but this was a shining example of 8x8 done well -- not too much reliance on the "roping" between horizontally adjacent boxes, nor did the puzzle's difficulty just "give up" halfway through. Given the constructor and the wonderful batch of other solvers, no wonder it's so awesome and highly rated :) Thank you thank you!!

You are much welcome, Jackson Philion, thank you for your kind words! We are glad that you enjoyed the break-in and the course of the puzzle.
Kind regards, sujoyku

What a brilliant puzzle it was!!! And I am so proud of myself to figure it out without help (even after 1 hour starring with little progress before the break-in) :-) Thank you very much for creating such a treat!

@LehanLehan, thanks for help attempt, however before I solve the puzzle I cannot see hidden comments ;-)

Congratulations, SennyK, and thank you for your comment! We are glad that you enjoyed it. Also sorry for my oversight. I should have been aware you could not see LehanLehan's hidden comment and instead edit yours.

Fiendish and most excellent! That break-in is really something special. I appreciate the solution code allowed me to forget a zero one final time :)

Thank you for your comment, QuiltyAsCharged! I can relate very much: We forgot about 0s while setting more than once. :) It is great to hear you liked the puzzle.
Kind regards, sujoyku

5* horror beginning and a 2* feel-good happy ending:) The possibility of zero-values everywhere was so confusing before finding exactly the right questions. Very nice, thank you both!
