Leftovers

(Published on 16. October 2025, 03:10 by ThePedallingPianist)

Many thanks to the testers, particularly ChinStrap, who originally inspired the puzzle and subsequently tested it on Twitch!

Hint (highlight to reveal):

During the break-in, you may notice that the digits that are not missing from rows 1, 2 and 3 end up in the middle column of box 2. Another way to phrase this is that there is a set of all 9 digits in r123c489, and this kind of set keeps being useful elsewhere in the puzzle.

SQUISHDOKU
• Place a digit from 1-9 in each cell of the main 7x7 grid;
• Digits may not repeat in a row, column or 3x3 box of this grid;
• The grid contains nine 3x3 boxes, which overlap at the dashed lines;
• Clues in pills refer to the digits missing from the associated row or column, but pills do not need to be filled.

PILL CLUES
• Thick purple pills are X-sum clues, i.e. the digits missing from that row or column can form a 2-digit number, which is the sum of the first X digits from the direction of the pill, where X is the first digit seen;
• The digits missing from a row with a pill containing a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio;
• The digits missing from a row with a pill containing a white dot are consecutive;
• The digits missing from a column with a pill containing an X sum to 10.

Solution code: Top row, left to right (7 digits)

Figured out the hint myself, but the fight was far from over from there. What a ride, but it was definitely interesting all the way. Ended up trying a ton of different approaches to get something out of it, and very slowly but surely the results started to appear. Took me over 3 hours, but worth it.

Awesome puzzle! I found this surprisingly approachable, but probably just found the idea really quickly.
