Ediacarium (Still Life Sudoku)

(Eingestellt Heute, 18:37 Uhr von Qodec)

Directly inspired by Kafkapharnaum's Cambrian, featuring a rule based on John Conway's Game of Life that appears to have inspired Sktx to start setting puzzles - which I can easily understand! There are several more puzzles with this rule if you wish to see them.

  • Sudoku: Each row, column, and region indicated by thick borders in the grid must contain the digits 1 to 9 once each.
  • Still Life: Shade some cells ("active cells") such that: A. The (up to 8) cells neighbouring an active cell contain exactly 2 or 3 other active cells; and B. An unshaded ("inactive") cell never has exactly 3 active neighbours. In other words: if a cell has 3 active neighbours, it must itself be active; if a cell has 2 active neighbours, it can be either; if a cell has any other number of active neighbours, it must be inactive. See example below.
  • Killer cages (modified): An area surrounded by a dashed line is a killer cage. Digits in a cage MAY REPEAT (if allowed by other rules). The number in the upper left corner gives the sum of all active cells in the cage.

You can play this puzzle online using Sudokupad: https://sudokupad.app/q1na7eh6wn, or Penpa+: https://tinyurl.com/yn43sx5n.

Example:

In this example, a 3x3 box with a Game of Life pattern is shown: green for active/shaded cells, grey for inactive/unshaded cells. All cells obey Still Life rules, except those with an exclamation mark ('!'). r1c2 and r3c3 are inactive but have exactly 3 active neighbours, while r1c1 and r2c2 are active but have less than 2 or more than 3 active neighbours, both of which are invalid.

Lösungscode: All digits in active cells in row 1 (from left to right) followed by all digits in inactive cells in column 1 (from top to bottom).

What a ride! It's kind of funny that the Still Life carried me through so much of it, when generally it's the learning curve part of these puzzles, but in the end I still had to battle my way through what was, for me at least, some pretty hard Killer sudoku haha. But whatever the approach to solve it, the whole construction was brilliantly put together, with some absolute powerhouse cages throughout. Really happy to see a setter of your standing take up this ruleset, and thanks for sharing!
