I think your current wording does not quite capture your desired meaning. Taking @Pairot’s example of N=3, the digit you want is not the third but the third one after the first cell, i.e. the fourth cell. Of course, if N=2, then you are looking for the sum of the first, the third and the fifth cells (and that might be a better example to give).
Personally, I don’t much care for expressions like “position N+1” (and that is even with degrees in mathematics!).
Anyway, a fun puzzle. It didn’t take me as long as a typical 1* puzzle, but I still felt it had two stars' worth of brain bending. Thanks!

I'm confused about the periodic sums rule. What would "every Nth digit" mean? For example, if N was 3, does that mean you sum the 1st and 4th digits, or the 1st and 3rd digits? I don't think it's clear.
- Your first interpretation is correct. I suppose I could update the wording to be: "A clue outside the grid indicates the sum of N and every position N + 1 in the row or column, where N is the digit in the first cell seen from the clue."
Or something like that. I'll have to think on it. - Sotehr
