Permafrost (Shimaguni Icebarn)

(Published on 16. September 2025, 09:00 by Agent)

The puzzle below is a hybrid of Shimaguni and Icebarn.

Shimaguni
  1. Shade a single group of orthogonally connected cells in each region.
  2. Shaded groups may not share a bold border.
  3. Each region must contain at least one shaded cell, and no two adjacent regions may contain the same number of shaded cells.
Icebarn
  1. Draw a path through the centers of some cells, entering the grid at the “IN” marking and exiting at the “OUT” marking.
  2. The path must travel through all of the arrows in the indicated direction.
  3. Two perpendicular line segments may intersect each other only on shaded cells, but they may not turn at their intersection or otherwise overlap.
  4. The path may not turn on shaded cells.
  5. Each orthogonally connected group of shaded cells must be passed through at least once.

Super fun puzzle! I also fell into just about every possible trap, but really enjoyed the entire solve experience!

This one played me like an absolute fiddle; I fell into almost every trap there was, but absolutely loved it and would take another beating like that any day.

Great fun, thanks!

@shartus, R8C2 can be disambiguated by one of the neighboring regions, because of this rule: "no two adjacent regions may contain the same number of shaded cells."

is r8c2 ambiguous?

otherwise this was amazing. for half an hour I thought there was no way I was on the correct path, up until the moment the congratulations message popped up!

This combination of two old Nikoli-puzzles works incredibly well, due to the fantastic setting, of course! Thank you very much for creating and sharing this wonderful gem.
