They're Escaping!

(Eingestellt am 14. September 2025, 01:21 Uhr von marty_sears)

This was my puzzle for Week 2 of Scojo's Impostor Challenge 2025, where I was given the very enjoyable task of impersonating the wonderful sujoyku. I did my best, and chose to use one of his favourite constraints - killer cages - paired with a recent experiment of his; killer lines. I thought this rather silly pairing of the two types of killer might be the sort of thing that would appeal to him. Unfortunately my attempted deception was not successful - the majority of voters were not fooled by it, and instead correctly voted for sujoyku's actual puzzle La Mer. I can see why, that excellent puzzle is a quintessential example of his style.

Rules:

- Normal sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Escaped Killers: Digits do not repeat on a killer line or in a killer cage. The total of a killer line is the same as the total of the killer cage it is escaping from.

Please leave a comment if you enjoy :)

A really interesting puzzle that I enjoyed at the start, and thought I was making great progress on, then got completely stuck, and had to cheat using Scojo's stream.

But the "insight" that broke it all was based on a single question that really didn't feel like it SHOULD'VE been that hard, I just somehow never encountered it before! (the one about Box 7 and Box 4).

But then it was necessary again with that shared digit in Boxes 5 and 6. And I almost didn't find it because I forgot what I had learned.

In the end, I have to say it was a pretty cool experience and I wish I hadn't needed the help!

Oof, that was hard. I must admit that, after staring at this all day, I had to watch part of Scojo's stream to find the break-in. After that, I did the rest without having to cheat.
I do like the escaping killer lines, though. Seems like a typical Marty thing to me...

Whow, this was great! The break-in was really hard for me, it was more than 30 minutes before I got a single digit. But as soon as I saw it, I couldn't unsee it, and the puzzle unraveled with little resistance.

It's really beautiful, there's just the one bottleneck logical point to make sense of, which gives you the one first digit, and as soon as you pass that bottleneck, you're home free. It's almost the epitome of variant sudoku.

Thank you very much for creating and sharing this lovely puzzle. As sujoyku already mentioned he would be proud to have set it by himself - as anybody else would.
