Under The Influence

(Published yesterday, 01:32 by marty_sears)

This was my puzzle for week 1 of Scojo's Impostor Challenge 2025. The task was to create something that is quintessentially my own style, so that voters would vote for it as the one set by me, rather than the one set by an impostor. Luckily I managed it, and some of my hallmarks were picked up on by people :)

Rules:

The grid contains nine 'influencer cells', each in a different row, column and box, and each containing a different digit.

Every cell in the grid has a value equal to its own digit plus the digits in any orthogonally adjacent influencer cells.

Eg: a cell containing a digit 2 would have a value of 10 if it neighbours an influencer 3 and an influencer 5, because 2 + 3 + 5 = 10.

CAGES: The small clue in the corner of a cage indicates the total value of the cells in that cage.

REGION SUM LINES: 3 x 3 box borders divide blue lines into segments. The values on each segment have the same sum, though this sum can be different for different lines.

Please leave a comment if you enjoy :)

Very nice, and i didn't even have to be under the influence of anything to solve it ;)

A joy as always!

This is my personal SOTY (Sudoku of the year) so far. Needless to say it is brillantly set including a very refreshing new (?) ruleset. I had so much fun solving this.
Thanks a lot, Marty, this made my day! <3

Great constraint brilliantly included. Top quality puzzle thx.

Wonderful puzzle packed with beautiful modifier logic! As Marty as we could wish a puzzle to be. Thank you for this gem, Marty!

Very nice! Accessible, but not too easy.
I like influencer cells; I don't think I've seen them before. I hope we'll see them used again, they don't seem like a one trick pony to me.
Edit: this "impostor challenge", is that publicly accessible somewhere?

Marty: thanks mscha! You will start seeing all the puzzles from the impostor challenge appearing on LMD this week. Scojo is solving the pairs of puzzles on his Twitch stream @scojosolves this week

Even without that typical colored frame I cannot think of another composer who could have set this lovely puzzle. Delightful and satisfying. Thank you very much for creating and sharing this gem.

Not too easy, not too hard, tons of fun.... as usual Marty!

Did I do it right? probably not. Did I make wrong logical jumps? probably. Did I have a blast? mhm

A really accessible introduction to a new rule type. Several times (honestly 3 separate times, I think) I made the same mistake which is I was focused so much about how an influencer cell affected a neighbour I didn't even realize that it is also affecting another neighbour. And yet the way the puzzle was set, I was able to recover pretty quickly after noticing a problem and coming back, without having to go too far down the wrong path.

Very forgiving which is nice for a new rule!

So smooth!

whow, a new type of modifier cells! And it works beautifully, and has all kinds of intricate logic.

The only tricky part is to remember that the modifier cells impacts the values of others around it, not of itself. This means that some "muscle memory" about marking candidates for modifier cells, will lead one astray here. (Is this the first-ever modifier cell type that impacts other cells rather than itself?)

All in all, a beautiful puzzle! Thank you Marty!!

I've never been this early to a Marty puzzle, this was fun!
