Learning to Color

(Published on 2. September 2025, 22:42 by The Bard)

This is a Genuinely Approachable Sudoku (GAS) provided you utilize a technique called coloring or lettering. That is your hint, have fun!!

Normal Sudoku rules apply, place the digits 1-9 in each row, column, and box.

Clone Regions: Shaded boxes act as extra regions that do not repeat digits in the given box, and also as clones where each digit is in the same position in each shaded region.

Little Killer: Clues outside the grid with an arrow are the sum of the digits in the cells along the indicated diagonal. Digits may repeat along these diagonals if allowed by other rules.

GAS for experts.

seriously, if you have to solve equations of the form
{A,B,C} > 4 AND include a 9
orange + red + green + yellow = 12
orange + red + green + yellow + 2 blue + purple + black = 21
blue + grey = 10,

you have entered the category of "almost approachable" aka "beginners can do this with some effort".

incidentally, relative to the 1-5 scale used on lmg, GAS sits at level 0

Also used letters instead of colours, because the colours don't look the same with the grey background.

Different question: What is the logical way to solve the final equations?
I used z3 sat solver it ^^;

I don't want to say too much that reveals the answer, but look at the little killers (the long one in particular) and ask, what is the only set of digits that make this possible? Then with that set look at the other ones to restrict it further.

Fun one! However, being colorblind, this one was a 2* for me ha!

~~
For me, once a puzzle looks like it needs more than 4 colors, I stop using colors and shift to letters. Even though I am not color blind it gets too busy. The nice thing about letters is that you can use the corner or center notation with them as well.

Good idea. I always forget that letters are an option.
