Decoder

(Published on 27. August 2025, 07:23 by pagedo)

Normal Sudoku rules apply.
Letters: The initial given digits have been decoded by using 2 letters per digit. You must determine which 2 letters represent each of the digits 1 to 9.
Cells with grey squares contain even digits.
Cells connected by a pink Renban line form a set of consecutive digits, in any order, without repeats.
Adjacent digits along a green German Whisper line must differ by at least 5.
Adjacent digits along an orange Dutch Whisper line must differ by at least 4.
Digits joined by a white dot are consecutive. Cells joined by a black dot, one digit is double the other.
Not all dots are given.
The small arrows and the red diamonds are not part of the rules or the sudoku solving. They are used to determine the solution word which is defined below.

You may use the Letter Decoding work area to assist you in determining what 2 letters represent each of the digits.

The digits in the red diamonds is the solution word when decoded. The small arrows show the order of the digits/letters. The SudokuPad completion message will assist you in determining which word is correct.

Solution code: Decode the digits highlighted by red diamonds to give the solution word. This will give at least 2 known words. The SudokuPad completion message after the solve will distinguish which word is correct. Enter the word in CAPITALS. If you missed the SudokuPad completion message, see above.

STAIRS.
i say STAIRS

pagedo: @VitP - Hi VitP. Unfortunately thats incorrect. The 3rd and 4th letters are decoded wrong to make STAIRS [all these letters are not in the final word].

ok, then, is the right word SATIRE ? surely that is the right answer ? or, at least, the BEST answer ?

The arrows are not used as less than signs

I seem to have found an inconsistency. Trial and error after that shows that R8C8 is 9 and R9C8 is 7. This appears to contradict the < sign between those cells.

Am I reading something wrong (I don't think the < signs are explained, so I assume they mean 'less than')?

pagedo: @GorgeousNicko - Thanks for your feedback. I can see where you were confused. I have updated the rules, the solve information and the image to hopefully be clearer re the red diamonds and the small arrows.

Thanks, but my point is that the diamond cell in the corner of the diamond line IS NOT less than the cell beneath it - at least according to the embedded solution. Changing the notation does not impact the fact that the upward arrow/> in R9C8 appears to be false.
