Flicker (Shadow Sums Sudoku)
(Published on 25. June 2025, 22:11 by Feadoor)
Another puzzle using the same variant as
Penumbra (do check it out!). This one should serve as a slightly gentler introduction to the variant rule and get you used to how to think about it, though it's still not a complete pushover.
Normal Sudoku rules apply: place a number from 1 to 9 into each cell so that every row, column and box contains each number exactly once.
Shadow sums: A clue outside the grid gives the sum of all numbers in that row/column which are smaller than the number immediately before them, when reading from the direction of the clue.
For example, if a row contains the numbers 463752891, then the correct sum would be 3 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 11 from the left, and 8 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 17 from the right.
Solution code: Row 6, left to right

Very nice! Here's a link for SudokuPad with solution checking enabled

Sam says: Link removed. My editorial decision to not provide solution checking is deliberate.

Got me occupied for the best part of the day to capture the unusual but very beautiful logic. Definitely not a pushover and not sure if I'm ready yet for Penumbra.

Sam says: Thanks for solving and for your kind words. Good luck with Penumbra!
Thanks
