Medieval World War (with FastSandals)

(Published on 27. May 2025, 02:46 by timotab)

This was a collaboration with my almost 12-year-old son, who goes by FastSandals. The combination of Arrows with Fortress is one of his favourites, because the Fortress cells put downward pressure on adjacent digits, and the arrows put upward pressure on the arrow circles. He has previously set Medieval Skirmish (4x4), and Medieval Warfare (6x6) using the same ruleset. While we are both credited, my help was mostly meta-help, by asking how the arrows and fortress clues can interact and how to make a good solve path. We both hope you enjoy this puzzle, and if you do, FastSandals in particular would love to hear your comments about what you liked.
  • Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and box.
  • Fortress: Cells shaded gray must be larger than their orthogonal non-fortress neighbors.
  • Arrows: Digits on an arrow must sum to the digit in the attached circle.

I actually found this quite a bit easier (though no less fun) than Medieval Warfare, whose break-in I found a little tricky. Medieval World War flowed very quickly and nicely! Great fun x

Great puzzle! Nice flow and some neat logic.

I liked the puzzle very much because the solve path had the perfect balance of not being too obvious, but simple enough for not being frustrating. And I'm easily frustrated. XD
Thank you both!

Very elegant use of the constraints.

This is a beautiful puzzle, the break-in is clean, the whole solve is smooth without being trivial, a very high quality work. Very well done!
