Delta Sums Intro

(Published on 26. May 2025, 01:00 by XeonRisq)

This is the introduction of a new constraint - Delta Sums.
For every set of adjacent digits in a row or column, the difference is calculated. Then the delta sum for the row or column is the sum of all these values.
Delta Quads function in a similar fashion; four digits, four differences added together in a 2x2 set of cells.
(A visual example has been provided below)
Thanks to the test solvers for valued feedback and assessment. Special thanks goes out to ClashCode and Allagem for coding and custom constraint creation.

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Delta Sums : A number in a square outside the grid gives the sum of the differences between each pair of adjacent digits in that row or column.
  • Delta Quads : A number in a square at an intersection gives the sum of the differences between each pair of adjacent digits in the surrounding four cells.
  • Kropki : Numbers that appear in the cells with a black dot between must have a ratio of 2:1.

Very interesting new idea and fun puzzle!

Appreciate the solve. Enjoyed your fresh perspective on this constraint with the puzzle you made as well.

Delta quads are really a nice addition to the rules as logic is more straightforward than logic involved in delta sums. Anyway, once you have thought about the mechanics involved, puzzle quickly unfold.

Not my strong suit, but I tried to make this first puzzle as easy as I could while including some interesting bits as well. Anyway, thanks for giving this one a go, and appreciate the feedback.

Beautiful puzzle with a rule set that was frightening at first glance. But after some thoughts about basic ideas it was a pretty smooth solve. Thank you:)

Hey again Elliott, glad you enjoyed the idea. It has some very strange properties but it's interesting enough to make a puzzle or two with it. The next one should be much tougher, but it will include one of your favorite constraints, but I won't give it away :P
