Your Outie Enjoys Puzzles

(Eingestellt am 14. Mai 2025, 00:32 Uhr von sshrpe)

Welcome, Macrodata Refiner. I realise you may be feeling a little disoriented. The good news is: you are at an orientation!

You might be wondering what you will be doing whilst working here. Well, it's all about the numbers. When you see the numbers, they may make you feel a certain way. Some of them may seem… odd. Others may evoke a sense of calm, or evenness. Your task is to sort the numbers into categories, based on how they make you feel.

If you complete the file within the time limit, there may be perks - such as finger traps, coffee cosies, or even the coveted Egg Bar.

Good luck, Macrodata Refiner. May Kier's blessings rest upon you in all your endeavours, and give you comfort.

Rules

  • Fill the grid with numbers such that the digits 1-8 appear once each in every column and row.

  • SEVERED REGIONS: The normal 8 regions have been severed into two sets. Regions in the 'even' set contain one each of all the even digits, regions in the 'odd' set contain one each of all the odd digits.

  • KILLER CAGES: Digits cannot repeat within a cage, and must sum to the small number in the corner.

  • WHISPERS: Consecutive digits on a green line must be at least 4 apart from each other.

  • KROPKI DOTS: Cells separated by a white dot must contain digits which are consecutive. Cells separated by a black dot must contain digits such that one is double the other.

Thanks for the explanation in the comment - helped me understand the rule and it was a fun puzzle to solve.

On the rules side, I think the severed region explanatin is too confusing. Suggest following rule instead:

"Each 2x2 square marked with bold lines contains either all odd or all even digits"

Also - I have a feeling it's possible to solve this without the 8 box constraint - as the top-left german whisper allows you link the pairty of outer boxes to inner boxes without the 8-box contraint.

I think I misunderstand the instructions around SEVERED REGIONS. I'm assuming standard regions are 2 tall and 4 wide. Which then splits into 2x2 regios that are either odd or even. By this logic I expect R7C1R8C2 being one parity and R7C3:R8C4 to be the other parity. Hence every sum spanning these subdivisions must be odd. however this contradicts the cage summing to 8 in the bottom row. What am I missing?:

sshrpe: Ah sorry, I guess it isn't necessarily fully clear. The regions aren't just split in half in place, they're scattered such that any 4x4 box on the grid could be even or odd. It's up to the solver to determine which boxes are even and which ones are odd. I hope that helps!

Oh, fun! It was nice for me to rejoin the two sets of colors I was using back into a single pair. Not very difficult, but it did require some logic I don't often have to use.

sshrpe: Thanks! I agree it’s not super difficult, partly because it resolves into some slightly offset 4x4 sudokus in the end, but I’m glad it was fun :) I’m thinking about exploring this concept a bit further, though, so maybe there’s more challenging versions to come
