Blueprints (ft. Andrewsarchus)

(Published on 14. May 2025, 09:00 by Nordy)

This puzzle was made in collaboration with Andrewsarchus, and is inspired by his puzzle Snakes of Chaos. Difficulty estimated at 4.5 stars.

Rules:

Chaos Construction: Divide the grid into orthogonally-connected regions and place the digits 0 to 8 in every row, column, and region.

Blueprints: Every cell in the grid has four edges—a top edge, bottom edge, left edge, and right edge—and each of those edges may or may not have a region border (the outermost edge of the grid is always considered a region border). A cell’s “blueprint” is the exact composition of region borders on that cell’s four edges. For example, a cell may have region borders on its top and left edges, and no region borders on its bottom and right edges.

Arrows: A digit N in a cell with an arrow indicates that N other cells have the same blueprint as that cell in the indicated direction.

Example:

Below is a 6x6 example puzzle (using the digits 0 to 5) to help illustrate the rules. You can play the example puzzle on SudokuPad here.

Solve Online:

Solution code: Row 9 with dashes for region borders (excluding the outermost edge of the grid). Ex: 012-34-567-8

Great opener, great logic, great spiritual successor to 'Snakes of Chaos'... the resolution of the puzzle might be my favorite part, but no spoilers! Very, very fun, and really a clever puzzle. Thank you!
