Cloudy Night

(Eingestellt am 5. Mai 2025, 15:54 Uhr von sshrpe)

This is my second sudoku puzzle construction (my first puzzle 'Flywheel' is here if you'd like a go at that one). In learning to construct these puzzles, I found I was only ever reaching for Kropki dots when I wanted to disambiguate things, so I wondered what a puzzle might look like if it only used dots. It turns out, it looks like a lot of dots! I hope you enjoy it, it's intended to be a bit of fun.

UPDATE NOTE: Inspired by a lovely comment from ppdswiss below, I've added an extra version of this puzzle. The grid is (almost) the same, but it uses progressive fog (in which the clouds clear around the entered digit) rather than the dynamic fog I used originally (in which the clouds clear somewhere on the grid when you reach milestones in the solve path). Each has a slightly different feel, but they end the same - so feel free to solve either (or both!).

Rules

Normal sudoku rules apply - enter the digits 1-9 once each into every row, column and 3×3 box.

KROPKI DOTS: A beautiful constellation of stars fills the night sky:

  • In cells connected by a hollow star, digits must be consecutive.
  • In cells connected by a filled in star, one digit must be exactly double the other.

FOG: Sadly, tonight the sky is obscured by clouds. Entering correct digits will clear the clouds, for a better view of the stars. No guessing is required.

Play

Lösungscode: The name of the revealed constellation in English (see completion message)

It's nice to see someone using an appropriate number of kropki dots <3 some setters are much too shy about these sorts of things.

sshrpe: Thank you kindly good sir! As the old saying goes: if you can’t solve your problem with Kropki dots, you’re not using enough Kropki dots :)

Great concept! I love the power of the last given digit.

Great puzzle. I liked the finish with the dynamic fog.
And I LOVED that your solution code was a couple of words on the congrats window than trying to remember some random numbers from the puzzle. I solve a couple,of these each day and I NEVER put in the solution code for that reason.
I hope EVERY setter starts doing this!

Maybe a little Lord of the Rings reference in there? ;)

I understand why some folks prefer the progressive fog, but I had a grand time with the original dynamic version.

thanks for easy to remember solution code

With dynamic fog puzzles, I rarely find the intended solution. At least the fog at the end of the dead pattern showed me the right path. Fun puzzle.

Realy nice, effortless, but very enjoyable bit of entertainment.
And thank you for the format of solution code - way preferred to all the "row 8 and then all the other rows and yor granma's email". :)

Thanks for the kind words, ppdswiss! Actually, your comment made me want to give it a try with the dynamic fog turned off, and it actually worked really nicely (and arguably fits the clouds theme a little better)! It's maybe a tad harder from a sudoku point of view, and I've had to add a few more dots here and there… dotted around the place… But I like both versions, so I've added in an alternate link above, in case anyone wants to try with progressive fog instead. :)

This is a nice easy puzzle - also it is one of those where the fog disappears when it wants to rather than clearing the immediate nearby cells when a correct digit is placed. This surprised me and stumped me for the first few mins as I couldn't work out what the break in was if it wasn't that which I'd worked out . . . so be aware, and put your trust in the stars to reveal themselves when they are ready to!
