If there is a graceful way to solve this, then my solve path was the exact opposite of that.

First handful of digits came quickly, then I stared at it for 90 minutes or so, then everything came rolling out

I spent a lot of time "chiseling" at the beginning, knocking out pencil marks one by one ... I may have missed something easier and more clever. Either way, I finally got there!
