Sudoku Variants Series (422) - Irregular Dots

(Published on 2. May 2025, 12:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every week. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Logic solvable
Like all of my sudoku variants, this puzzle can be solved by logic alone. Guessing is not required and also no sophisticated solving techniques are necessary; just plain and easy sudoku steps and of course the intrinsic logic this specific variant has to offer. In case you don't find that logic or get stuck, feel free to ask for a hint in the comments below this puzzle and I'll be happy to help you.

Irregular Dots
Place the digits 1-9 exactly once in each row, column and bold outlined region.
All adjacent cells that contain digits with a difference or a sum equal to the index number of the column or row are marked with a white dot (difference) or a black dot (sum).

Inspiration for this type comes from WSC2024.

Solve online in Penpa+ or in Sudokupad.

Solution code: Column 4.

Wonderful puzzle, but I must admit I had missed the negative constraint and yet successfully solved it! :) Lots of fun, though!

@Franjo : dont understand how to solve this one without the negative constraint you probably used very bad logic if you managed that

Reply: the negative constraint is indeed not necessary. :)

I could solve this puzzle without ever using the negative constraint! Or maybe I made a false deduction at some point? Anyway, I enjoyed the walk through and like this new ruleset. Thank you very much for introducing it with this lovely creation of yours.

Reply: I solved it today again, avoiding the negative constraint and that works too! :-)
Even no sophisticated moves are necessary.
I made this one as practise puzzle for the Dutch team before WSC and back then I didn't check the negative constraint being needed. I just wanted a puzzle that fulfilled the constraints such that we could get a bit more in touch with the type.
