Fog Magic

(Eingestellt am 21. April 2025, 00:04 Uhr von pagedo)

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply.
There is a Magic Square in grid box 5. A magic square is a 3x3 square with the digits 1-9 where all rows, columns and diagonals have the same sum. See below for a Magic Square example and if necessary Magic Square hints.
Cells connected by a pink Renban line form a set of consecutive digits, in any order, without repeats.
Cells joined by an X sum to 10. Cells joined by a V sum to 5.
Cells joined by a white dot have consecutive digits. Cells joined by a black dot, one digit is double the other.
Not all Xs, Vs or dots are given.
Parts of the board is covered in fog. Placing the correct digits in all the revealed cells will lift more fog and reveal other cells.

Solve Experience:

Placing correct digits on fog cells will not reveal any cells. A more rewarding solution can be achieved by restricting all pencil markings and correct digits to revealed cells only.
Candidates for line cells that extend into fog may be considered to determine the extent of the line but should not require any pencil markings or correct digits on the fog covered cells.

Magic Squares Example and Hints

An example of a Magic Square is shown below.

Magic Square Hints (select text to reveal hint):

Hint 1: All Rows, Columns and Diagonals of a Magic Square sum to 15.

Hint 2: All even digits are in the corners of the 3x3 square.

Hint 3: All odd digits are in the middle row and the middle column of the 3x3 square.

Hint 4: There is always a 5 in the middle cell.

Hint 5: The 3 digit groupings of digits in rows, columns and digonals are always the same (eg always 816, 852 etc). Only the even digit order or box rotation will be different to the above example.

I rated this 1/5 difficulty.

It was a really interesting (and entertaining) idea to "limit" my scanning to fogless areas of the puzzle. It was a bit unusual but led to an enjoyable & approachable solve.

I think this sort of idea/"genre" may be somewhat limited in the ability to make a particularly hard fog puzzle (since the difficulty in FoW and dFoW puzzles typically lies in finding logic in/across foggy cells), but it was definitely interesting and well-executed. I didn't find myself scanning the foggy cells due to the logic being straightforward enough to direct my attention to the correct areas.

While finishing the second reveal, I had a thought that the next reveal could be the phistomefel ring corner cells. This wasn't the actual sequence in the puzzle, but I imagine this sort of trick could be an interesting idea for a similar type of puzzle.

Either way, this puzzle was nice & enjoyable. Thanks for sharing!

@TheNineElements Thank you for your comments. I agree this type of reveal will only be very easy/easy puzzels. I am glay you enjoyed the intended solve experience. The 3rd ring reveal could have got interesting with incorporating the corners as well. But this was a concentric square experience. Perhaps more interesting for another future puzzle.

Nice easy example of my favourite genre.

Fixed the input clearing fog - lost the "cell input clear nothing" setting

I liked this, but the fog rule did throw me off at the beginning. The rule seems accurate, but just not very intuitive when you've never seen it before.

"Placing correct digits on fog cells will not reveal any cells." That is wrogn, placing correct digits on fog cell will clear the fog from that cell
@SudokuFan thanks for pointing that out. Somewhere towards the end I lost the "cell input clear nothing" setting.
