Incognito

(Published on 13. April 2025, 21:34 by Kafkapharnaum)

Late weekend impromptu post, that I've been convinced to publish here by one of the testers, KenGlue, seeing how it had some success on Discord, and with encouragement from none other than DiMono, so, let's go!

This is meant to be an approachable Chaos Construction for those who don't normally, if ever, play such puzzles, and to help make that jump, a 6x6 appetizer-warmup is also provided below the main puzzle. I hope you enjoy!

RULES

CHAOS CONSTRUCTION
– Divide the grid into 9 regions, each made of 9 orthogonally connected cells, such that each row, column, and 9 cell region contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once each.
– The digit in the top left cell of a region is its Region Number (eg, r3c6 is a "higher" top left cell than r4c1 despite being much further to the right). No two regions may have the same Region Number, such that the Region Numbers must form a set of the digits 1 to 9.

KILLER
– In cages, digits must not repeat and must sum to the total indicated in the top left corner, where given.
– The digit in the top left cell of a cage with an indicated total is also the Region Number of the region it is in.

Solve on Sudokupad

(To the testers, please note that this is not the version that was posted on the CTC Discord,
but an ever so slightly modified version; the solution is the same)

I rarely look at 3-star puzzles, as I have an ever-growing mountain of 5-star puzzles waiting, but I'm really glad I did this one! Many beautiful deductions along the way! Incredible a unique solution can be obtained. Incredible setting! As earthpuzzles said, I'm looking forward to the follow-up! :D

Thanks a lot for making that exception, much appreciated, and glad you enjoyed! And it's funny that you'd say you're looking forward to the follow-up, as this one here was part of a practice of sorts for an eventuality that you yourself raised hehe -- and I appreciate the compliment but I don't think I'm quiiite there yet in terms of minimalism! ;-)

Enjoyed this slice of killer chaos! Now I’m curious to see what follows. Adding in doppleganger? Tougher sums? Looking forward to finding out!

Thank you for playing this one, glad to hear you enjoyed it! It remains to be seen what will follow, but one thing I can say is that you guessed right that it IS destined to be followed by something else at some point hehe :O

It took me about 75 minutes because I am both sick and very tired at the moment. In my current state 3* felt about right but it might be a 2* on a good day. I rather hope the puzzle doesn't get downgraded to 2*. I wanted to earn another 3* solve. I will have to come back and try some of your older puzzles. that have already gone red. Very nice!
...............
Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm really happy you enjoyed the puzzle :D Perfectly understandable time given your state, and I hope you'll be feeling better soon, but actually it looks like you did quite well in the end, seeing how the puzzle was confirmed as a 3/5 despite being solved, I noticed, by a lot of incredible solvers who go through puzzles like this like candy! XD
And about the older puzzles of mine, one I'm fond of is Napoleon, a 2/5 with a humorous touch. In any case, thanks again for that great feedback!

Much smoother second time around - another fun CC :)

Oh you played the slightly modified version too -- glad to hear it did the trick then; thanks for sharing, and really just for being so consistently such an awesome tester! :D
