This FOG is a Killer GAS

(Published on 9. April 2025, 15:23 by meggen033)

This is my first attempt at making a GAS (Genuinely Approachable Sudoku) puzzle and I figured why not add some fog! Post your times in the comments and let me know if it is truly a GAS or if it's still just a liquid.

Solve with SudokuPad

• Normal Sudoku rules apply.

• The grid is partially covered with fog. Correctly placed digits will clear the fog around that cell. No guessing is required.

• Digits in a cage do not repeat and sum to the clue in the top left.

• A black dot between cells indicates cell values with a 2:1 ratio. A white dot between cells indicates cells with consecutive values. Not all dots are given.

Happy Solving and God Bless

22:00 here for someone a bit new to variant sudoku. I missed something obvious about half-way through, but once I noticed it, the rest flowed very smoothly. Great puzzle and thank you for sharing!

Over 30 minutes while at work, sneaking in this puzzle :-)

on 22. April 2025, 18:49 by mwalles
It took me 17:17. Would have been faster, but I miss penciled marked a cell and had to backtrack to find where it was.

Great puzzle and completely approachable.

I agree, this is a GAS! Thank you for all your puzzles.

11:23 for me, and I rated this 1/5 for difficulty as I do most puzzles that take me under 15-20 minutes. I usually do GAS puzzles faster, but I'd call this GAS too. Nice.

I rated this 1/5 difficulty

Great GAS puzzle! It was a nice & approachable solve, and definitely in the right difficulty range (1*).

It was a bit easier than most of your other FoW puzzles (from the various different series), and it had a short/simple ruleset that would be great for beginners to work with.

I typically consider a puzzle to be a 'GAS' if a beginner would be able to successfully solve the puzzle without any assistance (and with no guessing), given they have a basic understanding of classic sudoku & the included variant rules. So they would fall in the 1* or easier 2* difficulty range.

I think 2* puzzles can be a GAS puzzle, depending on why they are 'harder' than a normal 1*. For example, if the logic to resolve a key cell requires several different deductions from multiple different clues, but the individual deductions are straightforward/approachable/easy on their own - then I may consider it 'genuinely approachable' while still being 2* difficulty because of the required logical steps. IIRC, the CTC GAS collections have puzzles included that could be considered 2* difficulty (at least, IMO there were several trickier ones) - and that is partially what I'm basing this off of.

I also think that FoW helps make trickier puzzles 'genuinely approachable', since the solver is forced to look at specific areas of the puzzle that are important. Since there is a narrower area to search, finding the logic (even if slightly harder than a 1*) becomes much easier IMO.

---

Either way, this puzzle definitely falls into that category - and I think several other puzzles from your various FoW series and some of your other easier anti-knight puzzles would also fit into the 'GAS' category (at least the easier ones from those series).

Thanks for sharing!

12:02 for me. I think this is slightly on the harder side of GAS, but still falls within that description. Very fun and well-made, as always!

19:38 and record for slowest comment so far! Even though I am slow I found this puzzle very enjoyable. I love when fog reveals just enough. It felt just right.
