On Equal Footing

(Published on 17. March 2025, 15:58 by sujoyku)

The Equal Split Lines are one of my favourite constraints to set with. Compared to Region Sum Lines, they are more flexible, but the non-repeating inside segments also gives them a more geometric flavour. In this puzzle, I have tried to explore those ideas further. I like to thank all testers on the CTC and Sudoku Stream Team discord servers. As always, your comments are much appreciated. I wish you joyful solving!

- Normal Sudoku rules apply, i.e. each row, column and 3x3 region has to contain the digits from 1 to 9 once each.

- Equal Split Lines: Dots divide blue lines into sements with equal sums. Digits may not repeat inside a segment. For example, a valid Equal Split Line could read 19-235-46-1234.

This is beautiful puzzle! The lines with their restrictive lengths provide a very smooth solve. Not easy but never despairing. Thanks a lot for sharing this delightful puzzle.

Very nice. And for some strange reason, the straight lines instead of curved lines seems to make it easier.

Very cool! I love how one rule set can incorporate such interesting combinations of pure sudoku, killer sudoku and geometry with pressured squares being able to force so much progress.
Thank you.

When I first saw this new ESL lines, I was telling myself "What's the point ? What's the added value in comparison to RSL ?". Now I see. Thank you for bringing the light to the blind man I was. Great puzzle.

Thank you for your comment, mihel111! I am glad you appreciate the new ESL constraint. Initially, I only compared them with RSL, but by now they feel like a geometric mix of RSL and killer cages.

Very nice use of Equal Split lines with - yet again - very fresh ideas. Hard to say more without spoilers, but there is some logic in this that would not be possible with ordinary region sum lines and that I definitely want to explore further.

Thank you for your comment, gdc! I am glad you liked the puzzle. To me, the Equal Split Lines feel like a gold mine. I am very curious of all the puzzles arising from the prompt.
