Ghostly Numbers

(Published on 13. March 2025, 17:35 by Tprecht)

Hi everyone! After warming up in the last couple of days with my puzzle posts ‘Binairo +1’ and ‘Killer Reverse’, here comes another newly invented type of puzzle, ‘Ghostly Numbers’. I particularly enjoy this one because it holds some surprisingly cool conclusions. I hope you enjoy it too. Feel free to leave a comment on how you like it and whether you already know something similar or what this puzzle might remind you of. I'll be posting a second, more difficult ‘Ghostly Numbers’ puzzle in the next few days. For all those of you who are still underchallenged with this one :)

Rules:

Fill the puzzle grid with numbers from 1 to 9. Each possible number may only occur once per row and column.

All the lowest and highest numbers (1 and 9) and all so-called ‘ghostly numbers’ are not given. Ghostly numbers stand within a row or column between a number with a lower value and a number with a higher value. All numbers already given are not ghostly numbers.

Examples, based on a puzzle grid with numbers from 1 to 9:
• In a sequence ‘5-6-8’, the 6 would be missing as a ghostly number.
• In a sequence ‘9-6-2-1’, the 6 and the 2 would be missing as ghostly numbers would be missing, as would the 9 and the 1 as the highest and lowest numbers respectively.
• In a sequence ‘5-6-2-4’, no number would be missing.

@RockyRoer: Thanks for your input & for setting the puzzle up in sudoku pad :)

I will admit, I was a little unclear on the rules - I initially though the 6 and 2 in your 9621 example were ghostly because they were between 1 and 9, but later realized that the 'between' rule was only for cells directly next to them. So the 6 is ghostly because it's between 9 and 2. If the numbers were 9261, then neither the 2 nor the 6 would be ghostly. But looking at your example 4x4 puzzle clarified that.

Fun new rule - I hope that many will try it. Here's a link to the puzzle in Sven's sudoku pad: https://sudokupad.app/yltjgwul0t

I made the puzzle using Sirxemics Sudokumaker - it's pretty intuitive and powerful to make sudoku and sudoku-like puzzles if you want to give it a try: www.sudokumaker.app
