Anableps (Aquarium + Myopia)

(Published on 17. February 2025, 17:38 by sfushidahardy)

Anableps

Made for round one of the Pencil Puzzle Madness tournament. I hope you enjoy the puzzle!

Rules:
  • Standard myopia rules apply: draw a loop which travels along edges of the grid, and does not branch or cross itself. Arrows point toward the loop segments closest to the clue. If a clue has multiple arrowheads, the distance to the closest loop segment must be the same in each direction.
  • Aquarium variant: The numbers around the grid indicate the number of shaded (water) cells in that row/column. Water can only be inside of the myopia loop, and water must have a loop segment or another water cell below it. Water follows the laws of physics: i.e. each orthogonally connected body of water must have the same surface level everywhere (including in U-shaped areas).

Other puzzles I've made for the tournament:
Round two: Canyonlands.
Round three: Zombie!.
Semi-final: Amoeba Festival.
Final: Janus.

Solution code: Each arrow clue is either air (A), water (W), or outside (O). Give the arrow-types, in reading order (left-to-right, top-to-bottom). E.g. WAWOOWAOWWWWO.

Great puzzle ! Same as the others, it felt like it was broken around some steps, and then the tiniest option appears around the corner and makes it not broken. That's how intuition gets defeated in the best way. Thanks :)

Sublime. The number of times I rewound something thinking I was wrong, to realize later I was correct...whew. Tricky puzzle, but very rewarding. Some really precise setting here, very impressive. Thank you!

That solution code was how I felt at several points while solving this, but it was totally worth it!
