Cutting a Diamond

Note

I published a version of this puzzle yesterday with an error in its solution checking. I am grateful to mezkur7 for discovering this and pointing it out to me. Since I didn't immediately know how this mistake could have occurred, I took it offline. This is a corrected version. Apologies to all who already solved the previous version, and to those who tried and felt it was impossible because of the erroneous solution checking. I hope you will enjoy this corrected version.

Happy solving!

Rules

  • Sudoku: Place the digits 1 to 9 once each in every row, column, and box.
  • Cages: Digits within a cage do not repeat and sum to the indicated total.

A hint

The first step of the break-in is a deduction that I don't really consider to be the heart of the puzzle. It is merely a way to create the setup for certain deductions that I wanted to come out. So that everyone can enjoy the puzzle, here is a hint for the break-in (select the text to reveal):

The combined value of the eight cages intersecting row 5 and column 5 together is 89, which is one off the minimum 88 they could be.
