The Quiet Whispers Between Loops

(Published on 30. September 2024, 20:28 by Jolly Rogers)

RULES:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Draw a one-cell-wide loop of orthogonally connected cells, which does not branch or touch itself, not even diagonally.
  • Adjacent digits along the loop must differ by at least 5.
  • Double Arrows: The sum of the digits along a line is equal to the sum of the digits in the circles at either end of the line.
  • All circles must be on the loop.
  • The inequality symbol '>' between two cells points towards the smaller digit.

If you interpret the rule in such a way that the loop must be unique, and as soon as you identify a possible segment, you exclude all digits that could form another valid loop, you can make quick progress (so, for example, if I have two 8s that I can connect on the left and top, and in one connection, only 1, 2, or 3 remain, I can immediately exclude 1, 2, and 3 in the other connection). I encountered this multiple times here, whereas I’ve never experienced this in other Whisper Loop puzzles. That’s why I’d give the puzzle more like 2.5 stars instead of 3 (but definitely not 4 stars).
