Opposition (Black holes/Killer/Teleporting little killer)

(Eingestellt am 9. Februar 2024, 12:00 Uhr von dumediat)

In January 2024, I hosted a setting contest in the Sudoku Skunkworks, where setters were given 90 minutes to set a puzzle using one of their favorite constraints, along with one of their least favorite (these were submitted to me before the prompt was revealed). The prize for the winner was a personalized puzzle from me, which heliopolix won with their puzzle Inviscid Vorticity (which I highly recommend you try!).

This puzzle uses a constraint that heliopolix created involving black and white holes and teleporting little killer clues, which I found fascinating. I decided to add a slight twist of my own in this puzzle, but I encourage you to check out some of the originals. The puzzle Tachyons and Black Holes includes a 6x6 example with a solution in case you want to visualize how the rules work.

Ratings, comments, and feedback are much appreciated! Please feel free to reach out to me on Discord if you have any comments or questions. Please also feel free to try my other puzzles here.

Rules:

  • Place the digits 1-9 into each cell in the grid such that digits do not repeat in any row or column.
  • Place nine 'black holes' in the grid, one in each row and column, each with different digits. Place nine 'white holes' in the grid with the same rules. Put black and white holes in different cells.
  • Black holes have zero value and white holes have double value.
  • The values of cells within cages must sum to the number in the top-left corner. Digits may not repeat within a cage (but values can). Any cage must have the same number of black and white holes (including none).
  • Teleporting little killers: Clues outside the grid show the sum of the values in the indicated direction. These sums teleport from black holes to white holes with the same digit (never the other way). They can teleport one or more times (or not at all) and they never change direction. Include all visited holes in the sum.
  • Little killer clues with black arrows must visit the same number of black and white holes (including none); clues with red arrows may or may not follow this rule.

Slick. Never before has there been a five-star puzzle where every step is three stars. To be clear, this is not a three-star puzzle: Dumediat performed a magic trick to turn these individual steps into a five-starer.

the way the puzzle resolves felt to me (almost) as cool as the actual black holes.

This is an awesome puzzle! It takes the original black hole ruleset and transforms it in very clever ways, resulting in a truly excellent solving experience.

Thank you again for hosting the exhilarating competition, and for crafting such an enjoyable prize!
