RULES:

Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits on red lines (Kippar Lines) show the distance (number of orthogonally connected cells) between the digit and the nearest digit that is identical to that digit. (i.e r1c1 and r1c9 have a distance of 7.) Adjacent digits on green lines (German Whispers) must differ by at least 5.

solution code wasn't working because it originally said c1 + c8. Can confirm c1+c9 is the correct solution code.

Thanks for the rules clarification, it helped a lot. I got stuck a couple times struggling to find a path forward, eventually figured it out. Enjoyable deductions about distance!

I also just tried it on the assumption that r1c1 and r1c9 are a distance of 7 cells, rather than 8, and that did result in a unique solution. But it wasn't the intended solution code.

I believe this is impossible.

Just to check I'm understanding how you're calculating distance, if r1c1 was 7, then r3c6 and r6c3 would also have to be 7, as they are 7 cells away from r1c1, and any other cell in box 2/4 would be closer than 7 cells. Is that correct?

I've triple-checked my logic, and happy to type it out in full if you want. Short version is box 1 red line can't have both 6 & 7, so is 23456 or 23457. Now r8c5 & r9c4 are a 34 pair, r9c5 is 5. r7c2, r8c9 are 5 by distance, so r1c3 is 5, r3c6 is 5 by distance.

r1c1 can no longer be 7, r1c2/r2c1 can no longer be 6, as they'd need put 6 or 7 into r3c6. Therefore r1c1 is 6. 6 in box 2 is on the lower whisper, so r6c3 is 1.

Whisper lines force r2c1 to be 3, r4c2 to be 9, and the 3 in r2c1 has no 3 in range, so the puzzle is broken.
